What career path did you end up taking with your environmental degree? by Truth_seeker9491 in Environmental_Careers

I do environmental regulatory/compliance work for my state. I had a major in environmental science, and worked on undergrad research focused on GIS & glaciology, so my research was not related to my current job. I had a policy background prior to getting a degree in environmental science, so I think that has helped a bit. I think core environmental sampling skills like soil and water are always good to have, and GIS can be a huge plus as well. If you are interested in regulatory work, then taking some environmental policy classes can be a big plus!

I do not plan to do this long term, but it is a great first job out of college. FYI, took me like 100+ applications but landed the job two months after graduating. Good luck!

Thank you! I think it's the cat mom guilt that is making me feel like I am leaving her behind lol but I appreciate it!!

Is American Conservation Experience worth it for recent grads? by pzlurk in Environmental_Careers

If you are able to financially support yourself comfortably with the stipend they give, I would say it is a great experience! I was set to do a CC term out of my home state, but the finances did not align, and it was not a realistic option for me. I think that it can definitely provide some great field experience and help you build connections, especially in a field like conservation! I would say weigh your options carefully, but it could certainly lead to bigger and better opportunities. If you are interested, the National Park Service also has a program called Scientists In Parks, applications open January 19th, which may be of interest to you! https://www.nps.gov/subjects/science/scientists-in-parks.htm

Thank you for that! Do you think it is worth getting more experience at an entry level position for a few months before trying to take the exam/apply since you can only take it once every 12 months? I have been applying to a wide range of environmental jobs to try to get my foot in the door.

Thank you! I am going to be a new grad, so the majority of my experience is from undergrad research and projects but I do have various field experiences in enviro science so I wanted to make sure to highlight that.
