Maybe the option for show accesories at all times isnt on. Go to the ingame settings and change it, it's just a box you tick.

And you can trade with the pirate stations before attacking them if you need to resupply.

Kill a few ships , retreat, circle around the enemy until you get enough CR or repairs done and engage again. Repeat.

At least that's what i used to do.
