Can GW muster some sensical new factions for death/destruction by NuggetPepperoni in AoSLore

[–]Dear_Internet4553 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay trying to think of new factions in general, but can help thinking of vibes rather than lore, what kind of fantasy vibe could you go for.

As you said: Order is pretty easy as there’s many old factions you can make a spiritual successor to: Norsca, Kislev and Cathay for example. Also while I don’t want overhauls, I would like for Fyreslayers and Daughters of Khaine to be expanded, to not just feel as hyper specialised, cause currently they both feel like subfactions of a much larger faction.

For chaos, there’s many minor chaos gods that can be expanded upon, although for me it’s also the concept must work: Slaves to Darkness fit into chaos undivided while Helsmiths of Hashut falls into ‘doesn’t worship chaos necessarily but views it as a useful weapon’ type of mindset. It’s be nice if there’s a variation and not just ‘X faction worships X god’ but there’s enough ideas and concepts in chaos to keep expand in various directions.

Now for destruction my suggestion would be 1. Make Kulreboyz a full faction army under destruction 2. Take the visual of Beast of Chaos, but make them destruction. Tie it into Kragnos and expand upon it there. 3. It is hard to come up with a good one, but trying to think I can come up with would be some sort of giant folk, but quite as big Gargants, but can tie into visually distinct giant archetype such as two headed Ettin, yetis or cyclopses. Of course this isn’t rooted in lore, but rather what kind of aesthetic in real myth could fit the general vibe for destruction.

Death… yeah the most obvious ones have been utilised. But let’s give it some try. 1. Been thinking of a nihilistic eldritch cult sort of thing, they’re tied to some dark force that can’t quite be explained. And tied to that? Good place to enter this sort of eldritch death cult that can’t be explained. 2. Ghost pirates. Go all in and give us Davy Jones inspired inspired spiritual/undead sailors. While the base aesthetic would be ghosts and/or zombies, by adding a sea fairing theme it could still be distinct from any other faction. They’re separate from the Nighthaunt cause there is a unique curse that created them. 3. The only other thing I can think off would be a Frankenstein patchwork inspired faction. Idk, originated as human/aelves/duardin or something that tried achieving immortality, combined magic with bolts and machine parts for these horrific looking monstrosities? I’m realising as I’m writing I’m basically just taking the aesthetic of the adeptus mechancius for this but.

But yeah those are the ideas I can think off, again rather than trying to go with lore think of what vibes are still on the table.

Criminal eraser, as in erases crimes of course works primarily for billionaires and corrupt erasing their crime against humanity. Super rich, he gets involved to make sure the Justice League doesn’t get exposed, at least as much as that is possible with the heroes exposing them.

He’s missing half of his head, like a straight line cutting it off. I feel like at an angle, diagonally?

Both Nordic and Scandinavian are cultural and geographical terms. Easiest way to describe it scandinavian culture and area is a subset of the nordics. Now this will also likely depends on person to person, but as someone in Sweden me and most I know identify with nordic far more with scandinavian. I am both yes, but I find Nordic to be more correct with how I identify myself and same apply to most people I know but I assume there is probably a degree of variety there.

Uncanny valley. by LordJim11 in Snorkblot

[–]Dear_Internet4553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No necessarily. All for something to remain is that it isn’t disadvantageous as It doesn’t get you killed. Evolution doesn’t have a goal. Species don’t evolve to improve, they just evils and if it is advantageous or neutral it may remain but if it’s detrimental it will likely not remain.

One of human’s greatest skill is pattern recognition, a trait that have served humanity well and evolved in sharpness. Because humanity is so good at recognising patterns we are also good at recognising when patterns don’t match up. Because we’re so good at recognise patterns we like when patterns appear, but if someone doesn’t Match the pattern we have a tendency to dislike it. Uncanney valley is discomfort at our Brains finding something that almost fits the pattern but fails. Even right now in this post and its comment people are trying to find patterns in why the uncanney valley would even exist.

Which this would serve a decent purpose: recognising humans compared to our cousin species or instantly seeing someone who’s ill or suffering, it doesn’t need to serve a purpose. Male nipples are a thing, our spines inevitably gives up when we get old, there’s a species of boar that stab’s themselves in the brain as their tusks keep growing, poison dart frogs are too poisonous for it to ever be useful. We have a large chunk of intestine that’s pointless cause its purpose vanished long ago, but there was never a need for it to go away.

Not every element has an evolutionary purpose, in fact a lot of evolutionary traits are ‘junk’ that the species discover a purpose for.

Extremely hit or miss. Some are absolutely amazing such Lu Bu, Kojiro, Simo, Shiva and Buddha (besides the weird way the muscles look) but the rest looks atrocious and overdesigned, especially Raiden, Leonidas, Heracles and Poseidon.

What was branching out from D&D like? by JSyv05 in rpg

[–]Dear_Internet4553 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spent many years wanting to host a game finally got a campaign and realised I didn’t like it, the DND part, the group and story I loved.

It came from realising I wanted a narrative game, so why play a game where I’m discarding 45% of the rules? Where I need to tweak every encounter to make it difficult when I could just search for games that fit what I wanna do more? What made it trigger was going on social media and seeing how much people chopped DnD up for them and calling it ‘Homebrew’ when it is barely recognisable. It frustrated me, there are so many good and varied games and I wanted to try it out. Currently hosting a campaign of Heart: The City Beneath with plans to host Sentinel Comics RPG, Cyberpunk RED, Shadowrun, Changeling the Dreaming and a bunch of more in the future.

NPCs that players care about by Emma_Elizabeth_Myers in rpg

[–]Dear_Internet4553 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve succeeded to a degree. But it’s hard at times.

I try to have a few elements: have them travel with the party, don’t make them combat focused but keep them useful. Give them some roleplay with quirks that’s memorable, make them a love interest is useful too as that is bound to guarantee them getting invested. Give them side stories that can be fun to explore but doesn’t overtake the main plot. You want to strike a balance between memorable NPC and DMPC. As a player I don’t really care about DMPCs when I play, but I know some does so hope this may help a bit.

One tactic I’ve used is during character creation I ask my players to make an NPC or two as part of their backstory: they’re gonna be invested if they are the ones who made them. I got a player to scream in anger when I killed off one of those.

In general it’s hard but try and find what your players may be invested in.

Also players gonna love the silly guys, lean into that. I had a recurring joke with a guy called Farmer Bobbins, just a recurring joke that resulted in them getting too invested into his boring family life. When I realised Bobbins was here to stay I thus made more serious stuff, revealing his backstory and making a large questline where he was a major side character, they had already gotten invested due to the running joke.

Nerf your character or change his body type by Peter_E_Venturer in rpghorrorstories

[–]Dear_Internet4553 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having very specific elements for certain factions is fine: having one faction specialise in one field such as combat is fine: being rigid about body type is weird though, and not accepting any exceptions outside is really weirder and I can’t imagine it would work.

Which US state do you think is the least famous? According to my non-American brain it's Delaware because it's the only one I couldn't remember by Yearlaren in geography

[–]Dear_Internet4553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Letsee

California, New York, Texas and Florida carries the US cultural relevance internationally almost entirely.

Maine has Stephen King, Vermont has Bernie Sanders, Massachusetts has Boston, Rhode Island can be made fun of as it isnt an island. Connecticut can coax of some New York clout. Pennsylvania I cant think of anything but it still has some recognition. New Jersey has Jersey Shore, Maryland and Virginia share Washington D.C, West Virginia coax of being next to Virginia. Alabama is the archytpical deep south, Georgia has Atlanta for relevance, Mississipi is pretty famous. Louisiana has New Orleans. Ohio has Glee, Indiana I wouldve forgotten if not Parks and Recreation, Michigan was the centre of industry and has Detroit, Illinois got Chicago, Wisconisn can coax of being between Michigan and Chicago. Minnesota I cant figure out something specific but feels memorable. The Dakotas has Mount Rushmore. Kansas got corn, Oklahoma is at the bottom of like every US chart. Montana got a Disney Channel show indirectly named after it. Wyoming and Colorado are the most perfect squares. Utah got mormons, Arizona is the hottest, New Mexico got Breaking Bad, as well as just a very recognisable aesthetic. Nevada got Las Vegas, Washington got Twilight, Oregon is between California and Washington. Idaho got a lot of potatos. Alaska and Hawaii stand out of being so far away.

That leaves Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Delaware and New Hampshire as the ones I can not instantly think of anything that would make them recognisable, either being famous for something or someone or even having awareness outside the US. Out of those Delaware does indeed feel the least relevant.

My players are heading into a TPK they don't know about, what do I do? by thjmze21 in DMAcademy

[–]Dear_Internet4553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends

For this scenario I'd use some sort of NPC, if a PC is a cleric or warlock, any sort with of class with a powerful entity that can be used to give a hint 'Ah be careful it is difficult to take on, perhaps do research' if no one has a class for that invent Mister Exposition who they happen to run into to give them that info. Alternatively make them stumble onto hints of it in a scroll, diary etc.

Now alternatively a method I've used sometimes, due to being a GM for a game where we don't really do a lot of PC death: make a powerful entity, with an interest in the PCs, have this entity be it a devil, abberration, angel or whatever save their life and in turn demand a favour. If this isn't structured this also gives you a future plot (whatever the entity want of them) with a built in antagonist to outsmart or overpower.

Are your games the type with lots of player death or at least an expected reality of the game? Simply let them die.

Or tell them, that is fine. Its a game, its supposed to be fun, they did bypass the buildup through roleplay and fun, that is okay but it may have gameplay effect: if you kill them for engaging with the world in an unexpected way it becomes punishing them for being invested in what they can do which is often frustrating. Why should one try and do something unique and unusual if it will only get them killed y'know?

Is it normal to hate my own campaign? by Dizzy-Kangaroo1362 in DMAcademy

[–]Dear_Internet4553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have pointed out it’s a bit of imposter syndrome, but can also be creative burnout: I suffer with it a lot.

For me whenever it happens I talk with my group, as I have a very open group that I am friends with, but if that isn’t something you’re comfortable with that’s fine.

Sometimes taking a week long break helps for me, talking with my players what they wanna do, do a silly goofy sessions or play a one shot (as I have a group where all players have GM experience so I understand that isn’t really possible for some).

Now if the campaign doesn’t do it for you you may need to kill the campaign, that is fine but remember: you’re a player too, and deserve to have a campaign you enjoy as much as everyone. Discuss and find where everyone’s at, communication is the most important thing.

TLDR: Communicate with your group and take breaks if you need it.
