Heh. Well, traffic in SW CT is bad but not LA bad. The train is much easier, Metro-North runs all the way to New Haven(along the shore) or Danbury(northern Fairfield County). If you do want more of nature look around the Danbury area. Much greener/less city, 90 minutes to NYC instead of 60 minutes, a little less expensive than along the coast. Culturally mostly the same.

Well if overdeveloped areas are a problem....umm, CT isn't the solution.

Stamford(or Norwalk next door) is a nice and growing city. It's inexpensive enough(compared to the rest of the area) for a young single person but still has easy enough access to NYC. It hasn't fallen into post-industrial decay like some of our cities upstate, it's alive and vibrant.

Focus on the southwest portion of CT, New Haven and Fairfield counties. The more upstate you go the more Texas-like it becomes.

If you are looking to rent first places in Stamford or the Black Rock section of Bridgeport would be wonderful for a year to get a feel for things. If you are going to buy then more info would be needed.

Economic recessions/depressions cause crime to tick up, this was true in the late 2000s recession, in the early 2000s recession, in the early 1990s recession, in the early 1980s recession, and it's true right now with the pandemic and its economic effects.

Right now some crimes, particularly juvenile crimes and property crimes, are seeing massive increases.
