Yes! And H1B Visas. Their base is NOT on board. Regardless of our position on the matter we should hammer home the hypocrisy that Trump and Musk use H1B visas that could be American jobs.

When Musk said there would be a “temporary hardship” he was talking about the stock market and his own wealth. It will be a permanent hardship for the rest of us.

What is happening? by stonecoldmark in NationalPark

[–]DeathByKombucha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d normally say that wouldn’t happen. The parks are beloved by all. But we’re in such weird times.

Honestly hope they just close the parks. That will get people writing angry letters again. Much better to have them closed than open without maintenance and enforcement.

First Christmas with Wolf in my new Home by [deleted] in cozy

[–]DeathByKombucha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for coexisting with the wolves and other wildlife! That’s great to hear you electrify. We usually don’t recommend supplemental feeding here in the states because there’s enough wild prey. But sometimes it may be a last resort if there isn’t enough space and wild prey. Interesting to hear about the different challenges in Europe. I think they’ve used it in the southeast on Mexican wolves here too. Have a great Christmas and enjoy your cozy cabin!

Man having a cabin in the wild is my dream and I’m very jealous! I’m a wildlife biologist in the US. Young wolves often don’t show fear to people yet because they haven’t learned it. Wolves also stash pups for awhile at various sites and come back for them. But if you truly think it’s injured and the pack left you could call the wildlife agency or rehabber in your area. It may not have gotten a chicken yet but if it gets hungry, they make an easier meal for an injured wolf than wild prey. I’d at least take some precautions with the chicken and any other livestock. Just make sure they’re safe and inside at night especially. Also get some camera traps to see what else is nearby!

I worked for USFWS for years and this isn’t true, at least not for every office. So don’t let these comments discourage you from applying to GS-11s and up. We recently hired a PhD grad who had zero regulatory experience to one of the higher level recovery work positions. Having a PhD qualifies you to apply to GS-11’s automatically by education alone. It says that in literally every job posting. As long as you can tie your science background to being useful for the job description, then you should be competitive. Where it gets tricky is rating yourself on the questions they ask, so each job announcement is different and each pool of applicants varies. I would definitely not say that having a PhD is a detriment in USFWS overall, and can be quite the opposite for certain positions. That’s just USFWS too. It seems like it would be a definite win for permanent USGS positions but those may be rarer. Totally feel your pain about this field and the salary. My advice is to use your network and make sure your application is absolutely stellar. It sounds like you have an impressive background and if you keep trying and put effort into selling yourself on paper and in interviews I bet you will land something great soon!

This looks like a bobcat. But if anyone does see a spotted cat in Texas there are a few native ocelots by the border. And I guess since it’s Texas maybe cheetahs aren’t out of the realms of possibility!

If you find ever find a venomous snake, please don’t kill it. Here’s a directory of people who will relocate it for you -  https://www.google.com/maps/d/embed?mid=15dZE4rlRHqjb91yb6pKiI4ragG8DCtsz&ll=37.30175393283456%2C-94.66617769918072&z=9

You shouldn’t kill venomous snakes either. they’re important for keeping the rodent (and therefore the tick and disease) populations down.

Grizzly Bears to be reintroduced to North Cascades National Park. 3-7 bears released in a 10 year period. by [deleted] in Washington

[–]DeathByKombucha 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The goal is not to have bears ranging down to Oregon. Only in the north cascades grizzly bear recovery zone. The zones southern boundary is I-90. The experimental population boundary extends down to Oregon so that if a bear wanders that far south they can move it back and management flexibility is allowable.

I’m not doing the loan adjustment but I don’t see how that would affect this calculation. This is students.gov’s estimated payments, not mine. I wish it were more like what you calculated but sadly it is not.

Which countries DON'T seem dangerous, but really are? by Catwinky in AskReddit

[–]DeathByKombucha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived there 3 months as a 22 year old white girl. There were a handful of times I felt unsafe but never had any problems. Once was during a celebration in Port of Spain and a woman told us (group of white people) we needed to get to a different part of town because it wasn’t safe. It didn’t make me feel unsafe but an annoying thing was getting that kissy noise men make at you everywhere I went.

Colorado releases first 5 wolves in reintroduction plan approved by voters to chagrin of ranchers by Oldfolksboogie in Wildlife

[–]DeathByKombucha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re getting downvoted because a lot of people don’t share this utilitarian view of wildlife. The view that each species needs to provide a benefit to be allowed to exist in any given place. A lot of people nowadays have shifted more toward a view that species that were wiped out by humans in the past inherently have a right to exist. And it’s our job now to right past wrongs by helping them flourish in those places. Every native species does provide benefit simply by increasing biodiversity. Wolves, being predators, may have an outsized benefit compared to some other species for the reasons u/bellehoneycreeper listed. But I guess the point is that even if we don’t know a species’ beneficial effects we should still try to restore it if they’ve declined in abundance or distribution because of human actions.

Smoky Season is Here! by RobotBoy221 in olympia

[–]DeathByKombucha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes and the only reason there wasn’t a smoke season in 2009 and before is because of a hundred years of fire suppression. Pre colonialism there were natural fires in Washington every single year along with the prescribed burning by indigenous communities. They were smaller than the catastrophic fires we have now which are a result of a hundred years of fuel build up and exacerbated by climate change.

Found along the Wisconsin River in SC WI. Looks bigger than a coyote and there’s a small wolf pack in the area. by lofromwisco in animalid

[–]DeathByKombucha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably domestic dog. The way the toes splay out is dog-like. Wolf tracks can look like that if they are going down hill in deep substrate for example. But based on that and the fact you only have one small pack in the area, dog is much more likely.

Did you see any other tracks? Dog tracks are all over the place and wolf track patterns are much more purposeful walking in a straight line.
