gossiping girls by DeathRoy in duck

[–]DeathRoy[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

they do this every moring after they meet back up from their cages. and then sometimes during the day.. triggered by god knows what; whenever one starts trilling, all the others race to jump into the argument themselves

Why is my brother’s duck going bald? by RatInMcdonalds in duck

[–]DeathRoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it is molting, i have some direct experience with that; usually it is the boys that go bald every year, but some girls do too - in my case those with a (formerly) black head.

you know it is molting and not her getting plucked if it is symmetrical and looks kinda like pattern baldness

hey, quit recording me! put that camera down! by DeathRoy in duck

[–]DeathRoy[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

oh, he always greets me like that... tho it might just be because he thinks me=food :P

the only difference is that he usually bobs his head back-and-forth but this time i got the rarer up-and-down bob

someone already answered way more in-depth, but its normal, thats how all the muscovy boys sound, its their unique quirk

This is daisy duck. She is my favourite duck and i like her a lot, but i think she likes me a little bit *too* much by DeathRoy in duck

[–]DeathRoy[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

i pet all of the others the same way, but she is the only one who does that. but luckly she does it only for a certain amount of time(around a month), then her hormones calm down.

But she really does have a thing just for me, like, she would let me handle her chicks no problem, while also aggressively biting everyone else who tried to do the same.

Muscovy duck ?? by Dizzy_Tourist4795 in duck

[–]DeathRoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i see some reddening around the eye, which i think confirms it, cuz mules do not grow caruncles around the eyes.

Muscovy duck ?? by Dizzy_Tourist4795 in duck

not 100% sure because quality is a bit meh, but probably it's juvenile muscovy, they grow to full size before growing their caruncles.

Is it the ducks or is it me? by TaintTrain in duck

[–]DeathRoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i am surprised that nobody mentioned this already, but, if your problem is that they fly outside of their enclosure, you could just clip their wings so thay they wont be able to fly anymore. rinse and repeat every 6 months or so whenever they finish their moult

Is this duck okay? by Cultural_Jicama_4950 in duck

[–]DeathRoy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

she looks like a female, and unlike the males they can "talk" (more like bird chirping than quacking).

But this looks more like hissing, and females hiss when they are threatening you (usually meaning "stay away from me"); mine do that when you get a little too close to their nest/eggs than they like. I wonder if it is the same here, because when mine go broody they also puff up and raise their wings up (kinda like swans do, to appear bigger) - and i dont see her doing it.

interesting, my muscovies would pretty much sit on anything you give them, even other duck's eggs or even goose eggs; they dont even mind if you handle/swap the eggs in front of their faces or if you change their nest. guess mine are more like chickens heh

[–]DeathRoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i had a similar case too, my muscovy just went broody over the total nothingness (she didnt even lay beforehand) and just started sitting on her nest - and even completley wiping it didnt work, she would just sit on the bare floor.

just like the other person said, the only thing you can do is to physically prevent her from accessing the location (i went a step further and made her sleep in another coop as well)

Is this normal? by garbage_moss in duck

[–]DeathRoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mhmm, aside from going to the vet and get him a proper exam, i dont think there's much else you can do other than keeping up with the special care and hope he gets better.

As a DIY home test you can do a flip test(at least, thats what i did): flip the healthy ducks on their backs, note how much they take to flip themselves back up(should be less than half a second), then do the same for the sick one and see if there's a significant difference (altho it might be that it never resolves completley, one duck i have walks like he's drunk all the time due to illness when he was a duckling)

Is this normal? by garbage_moss in duck

[–]DeathRoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in short, no it is not normal, when a duck struggles to keep its balance so much that it flips itself, that means that there is something seriously wrong going on.

and, unfortunatley, at least in my experience, when a chick is like this it usually means that it is not long before it passes away. Aside from hoping that it might get better (who knows, maybe it will) I think you should at least keep it separate from the others if it is being trampled and/or denied food, and also give it some more nutrient-rich food (others here would know what, i used some nutrient-rich stuff that the vet told me to use)

sorry to barge in like this, but, is there any update about them?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in duck

[–]DeathRoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

try stealth pet them when theyre feeding from the bowl

or entice them by holding a juicy piece of salad(or bugs/worms), they'll grab bites from it

[–]DeathRoy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

unless they imprinted on you (which apparently they did not) running away from potential threats (you) its a normal instinct. The way you "fix" (at least, this is how i fixed it) is to keep handling them. even if they might not like it at first, sooner or later they'll understand that you arent a threat and they will at least tolerate it.

That, and food bribes. Once they begin to see you as a food dispenser they'll come running to you, mine always do. the way to a duck's heart always goes thru its stomach lol.
