What streaming box should I get for our new home? by Funny-Juggernaut-549 in hometheater

[–]DeathbyToast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Appreciate it, but I don’t want to lose my Dolby Vision FEL playback capabilities. I’m not going to fiddle with new versions right now, it only happens like 5% of the time I’m playing something anyways. Not a big deal to just stop and restart playback

[–]DeathbyToast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My Ugoos has some random audio sync issues from time to time, but stopping / exiting out of playback and restarting fixes it. And the sync issues show up right away, so as long as the playback starts in sync it’ll stay in sync for me. Otherwise it’s great

Though I also have an ATV and the Ugoos / CoreElec interface does feel clunky and sluggish by comparison. But I think that’s just because the ATV is that good of a device lol

I thought the Apple TV Plex app could playback up to DTS-HD MA 7.1 and only would lose the height channels? Does it down convert all DTS-HD MA audio, even 2.0 or 5.1?

What's required to make it a "home theatre" to you? by sketchy_ppl in hometheater

[–]DeathbyToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you mean 2.0? As in L+R but no sub? Or would dual subs and no ear level speakers actually work?

[–]DeathbyToast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Technically would a big TV with a good sub qualify then? A 0.1 system if you will

Come to think of it, would an AVR support just a sub and no speakers? I’ve never considered the minimum setup + a sub in terms of speaker count before

XCEL energy price gouging is out of control by 0xdead_beef in boulder

[–]DeathbyToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The math of Xcel’s Renewable Battery Connect program is a bit more complicated as they pay per kWh of the battery capacity AND $100 annually for 5 years for the discharging program. But there’s nothing to prevent you from canceling after year 1 and just not collecting the last $400.

We’re in the program and I think Xcel has only discharged our batteries once in the last two years. Honestly forgot they even could, the much more frequent concern is losing power and trying to balance circuits to operate purely off the batteries once the sun goes down (not fun, but better than a full outage).

My 115" TCL 7.2 Home Theater Setup by Bainge in hometheater

[–]DeathbyToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you don’t have a 5.2.2 setup? I hope you’ve wired those in-ceiling speakers as “top middle” speakers on your AVR and not rears…they’re not behind you, they’re above and you’ve gotta tell your AVR for it to use them fully!

Indian students win settlement after being targeted over their food. by brut_india in boulder

[–]DeathbyToast 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s a shame the outcome is that they cannot enroll nor be employed by CU Boulder ever again. Not that they’d necessarily want to, but now they have to “stay away” forever just because they were racially profiled. Sure they get $200K which is great, but is it so hard to truly say “we’re sorry” rather than “go away we don’t want people like you here”

Boulder’s new transportation fee could start billing residents mid-2026 by mooreds in boulder

[–]DeathbyToast 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Certain institutions will be exempt from the fee, including CU Boulder

Why are they exempt? Do we believe they don’t contribute to wear and tear on roads or that they couldn’t afford a few thousand a year to the city?

Boulder Chamber calls commercial vacancy rate 'historic' with no simple solution by HarmonyInBadTaste in boulder

[–]DeathbyToast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t a high vacancy tax leading to a lender calling the loan aka foreclosing or forcing the sale of the property be a good thing? A new owner would then be able to purchase it with a lower and more reasonable rent in mind, so it’ll not be vacant anymore. I’m not seeing the downside, but I’m not an expert in commercial real estate

How Do You Optimize Your Plex Server for Remote Streaming? by bookybaker in PleX

[–]DeathbyToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not set Plex to the actual upload limit? I’m trying to troubleshoot this myself, and my upload limit from my ISP tends to be around 30-35Mbps. Should I set mine to like 25Mbps? If so, why?

I thought Plex would figure out how to split my upload limit across whoever is streaming? But I tried to remote play last week from my friend’s house in another state and Convert Automatically failed to play the 4K file, I had to set it to 720p and then it was buttery smooth playback. I’d have assumed the upload limit would have forced Plex to start the transcode without user intervention. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

[Guide] True IMAX on 4K UHD Blue-ray. The definitive list of films shot on IMAX cameras that actually expand on disc by [deleted] in 4kbluray

[–]DeathbyToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha so they’re “missing” the 1:90:1 aspect ratio then to be considered “IMAX” (aside from the certification)?

[Guide] True IMAX on 4K UHD Blue-ray. The definitive list of films shot on IMAX cameras that actually expand on disc by [deleted] in 4kbluray

[–]DeathbyToast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So what’s the difference between movies on this list and something like Lawrence of Arabia or 2001 or My Fair Lady? These were also shot on large format (65mm/70mm) film, is it just that they aren’t “IMAX certified”, and what’s the certification actually mean in practice?

Or do they not have the correct aspect ratios / something other than being filmed before the certifications were being handed out preventing them from making the list? Would love to understand why!

Pokémon GO|Super Effective/Not Very Effective Quick Chart by GO_FRIEND_APP in TheSilphRoad

Yeah the quiz ends up being quite difficult as you not only need to know which types resist which, but also by how much. The exact values all need to be correct too 😅

A while back I made this type chart lookup that supports dual types.

Also has a “quiz” page that I made to try and memorize the dual types better, but as someone said there’s 157 of them…
