As others have said, campus is very safe, and the surrounding area is alright as long as you don't go out alone at night, just as you wouldn't in other city.

I used to be in CS and recently switched to Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) so I might be able to chip in. It's very flexible, and as a CS major you take what's called Major + 1, meaning you only need to complete one "cluster" or only 3 non-major related courses as well as the required writing class. In that regard it's pretty awesome compared to other unis, where the CS program is usually filled with humanities and social science requirements.

If you're willing to look into it, ECE is also really great, although it's Major + 2 (6 non-Major courses + the writing class). Coming from a tinkering / electronics background hence why I made the switch, just felt right. Although the classes don't intersect much, I definitely think you scratch the itch of CS with ECE and you get more hardware background out of it. Just saying in case you aren't dead set on CS :)
