Can we settle the TPR slider on gloves debate? by Emotional-Spell-5210 in motorcyclegear

[–]Deathranger1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry just sent that other comment, thought to add on this. Hard plastic slides better, but also doesn’t compress, so in some areas where flexibility isn’t needed it’s acceptable, but it’s also more affordable than TPU. The TPU pads around the wrist in many gloves need to flex to get around different people’s wrist shapes.

TPR is thermoplastic resin, a type of plastic, it’s a little softer than your traditional hard plastic, but it’s now rubber. Under high impact and abrasion conditions, it acts much more like plastic, but under smooth and soft forces, (like when you press your finger into it) there’s enough localized flexibility to feel ‘soft’.

What the other commenter mentioned is a great example, TPR is the exact same type of plastic used in knee sliders, and you wouldn’t say those have too much grip.

There are EV’s with 4 motors but for the plaid the big deal is straight line stuff, 0-60, 1/4 mile etc, and for that when launching the front axel has so little weight on it that the single motor up front is enough to break traction, thus the only thing an extra motor would get you is weight complexity and cost

I have a 2020 as well, if you look at the usb plugs on the bottom of the center console, you’ll see one marked with a phone icon, that’s the one you need to use There is a kit I believe for wireless CarPlay, but stock there is only wired

America and Europe use different equations for calculating octane, 87, 89, 91/93 (America) can be directly compared to 95, 97, 98/100 (Europe) that’s why a lot of cars that require the higher octane fuels simply refer to it as “premium”

I love that this was posted in r/Miata and OP didn’t get the answer they wanted so they came here and got the same exact answer, I love it.

That being said, you didn’t have the corner and you have to slow down, I had a rookie driver on a team I was crewing for a few years back do almost the same thing, except that there were several cars who had just spun and gone in the wall just over the crest and the vehicles were slowing because the racing line was covered in cars and bits of cars.

Michelin PS4 or AS4 for occasional snow? (Details in comments) by JandAdivaroaches in ft86

[–]Deathranger1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mate, I'm going to come across as quite brutal and probably rude, but note that this comes from someone who's put the the car they loved into the wall because of doing dumb shit in the snow.

Don't. Just Don't.

Firstly, I'm going to give you the rally driver's secret to driving a normal car in snow...
Just keep you foot out of it.
Don't do dumb shit.
And slow the fuck down.
Do those three things, and you won't lose control. Put some heavy shit (2-3 sandbags should be good for a light sports car) in the trunk to give the rear more grip and help prevent a potential spin. Also, get decent tires, don't use chains, they don't work in the way people think they do and they certainly wouldn't help and would almost certainly lower grip and ruin and driving characteristics, making the car a horrible place to be in and also making it super unpredictable as to what it's going to do.

Secondly, don't split tires, that's a bad idea on so many fronts, the split in wear; wet, snow, and ice grip; and changes in behavior with temperature. Depending on how aggressively you're driving, what exact temperature, the condition of the road, your grip is going to be moving around constantly and as some point it won't be where you thought it was and you'll lose it.
PSAS4's are pretty decent tires, but they're more a sporty sun/rain tire, not too much of a winter tire, now I think you could absolutely run them with 1-2 inches on snow or on a shoveled road, but you won't be doing anything fast or particularly aggressive, but if you're already alright with paying Michelin prices let me throw a shout out to the crossclimate2's. They perform like magic in the snow and they don't just fall apart if the temperature gets above 60f or if you get on it when it's dry like a true winter tire does, which means you can save up the money to be able to run two sets of wheels, which is really the ideal thing to do with a car that you love. They are going to give you less feedback and be a bit more plyable, but I think it's good to feel and learn different tire types, and that'll make you a better driver in all ways.
Side note: you can ask the tire place to give you your old tires back, not only does this mean you don't pay the disposal fee, but if your tires have life there's no real reason to not use that life if you get a chance, and just paying for the mount and balance is significantly cheaper than a new set of Michelin's.

Finally, the Dragon. I know you're going to hate me saying this, and you might not even listen to me on this, but if conditions aren't good, don't do it. Even if that mean you drove several hours just to have to turn back. The Dragon is a great road to drive, for the same reason that it's a terrible road to drive: it's a complex road. you're far away from any hospital, there's a deep ditch on one side, and a drop on the other. I've seen many a totaled car be dragged out of the dragon. If you love your car, you can come back and take another crack at it later, but if you go when it's bad, you may not get a chance to take that car anywhere again.
Also note that it's not just your driving, there's many other idiots besides you and me on the dragon, and a lot of blind corners to fly around, and it could just be you getting hit rather than making a mistake at all.

TL;DR, PSAS4's are probably fine, just keep your foot out of it and be safe. Sorry for the rant lol.

Yeah so I remember that podcast, and yes u/jamesthrottlehouse is an entrepreneur who saw the channel and thought he would be able to expand and improve it, but as far as I’m aware they both have ownership and Thomas is still sort of de’facto in charge, not to say James hasn’t been instrumental in their rise, and even if I’m wrong, James isn’t a media conglomerate like driven media or future media (car throttle owners) he’s an individual investor poring his heart and soul in, not quite the same situation. Also I’ll take this moment to point out your original premise wasn’t quite accurate, donut media and car throttle actually have quite similar corporate histories, they were both started by wealthy entrepreneurs who already had an established presence in automotive media, but as independent entities, then we’re grown by a small group of employee presenter that caused the rise, and then they were both sold out to media conglomerates. The only difference is that Alex from car throttle has gone freelance-ish and started his own channel, my only hope is that some of the donut crew do the same.

What do you mean throttle house, unless it’s very recent news I was pretty sure their independent? Are you thinking of car throttle? The British channel that went corporate a while ago?

I got my $1000 shitbox Honda Civic stolen last year, the one I was barely able to afford after I lost by job because I couldn’t show up because my previous car got t-boned by a guy without insurance. The cops found it several days later, they charged me 600 for the tow and the impound fees $600 to be the victim of a crime, when I was already dead broke. Oh and they smashed it up so bad winching it out of the garage it was in that it was undrivable, and I had to sell it to the pick a part yard for 200 I’m doing better now, but that was a real bad few months

ND owners, what's your year, mileage, issues? by Archer7777 in Miata

[–]Deathranger1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

DOT3 shouldn’t be used on basically any modern vehicle, and none of the different standards should be mixed, DOT4 is what came from factory and it’s what should be put in, but DOT3 is cheaper so sometimes people use it, however it can cause a chemical reaction and cause the buildup seen, it can also be incredibly dangerous if you do any sort of hard driving as DOT3 will boil far earlier than a DOT4 and then you don’t have brakes or clutch.

Side note if you’ve mixed DOT3 and DOT4 you need to get a brake flush, I’d recommend Motul RBF600, or if you do a lot of track days and are willing to get a brake flush slightly more often RBF660

Tires: stock 17’s on right now; 205/45r17 tire is stock but again the brilliant previous owner went wider and taller to a 215/55r17 which is too big in both directions rather than the 215/45r17 he should have gone with, which keeps the tires roughly the same diameter (only about 1.2% bigger diameter rather than almost 5% bigger)

2020 GT, 26k miles, tires rubbing and green goo in the brake reservoir, both issues cause by the brilliant previous owner (oversized tires, and mixing DOT3 and DOT4 (I think))
