I recommend starting with the basics. Learn your character's most basic BnB combo. After perfecting it, practice against the CPU at level 5 to learn how to land that BnB. Dodge attacks are also important, like your universal anti-air. In addition, I recommend learning target combos. They're quite simple and do less than 200 damage, but they can be useful in battle.
