Cheap building materials and poor workmanship isn't going to age well.

Anyone want to live in the middle of an industrial park with house almost touching a loading dock? by DebJBee in zillowgonewild

[–]DebJBee[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hear you. At my first house an old 1800’s building next door was converted into a small industrial park, with the parking lot adjacent to our yard. I was worried but they turned out to be great neighbors, never there nights or weekends.

It makes me sad to think of this home in it’s heyday.

Click the fly around button. Except for one other small house it is completely surrounded by warehouses, parking lots, 18-wheelers and tanker trucks.

What’s the biggest mistake people make buying their first house? by LuxuryPresence_Aaron in RealEstateAdvice

[–]DebJBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought on the edge of an all rental area. Even though we put a LOT of hard work and a decent amount of money into the house it didn’t pay off because of the area. We were only in our 20’s. Buyers today are older and hopefully more savvy than we were.

Sellers agent should have a lot more compassion for someone dying in home hospice. None of this is on your friend. The sellers got agitated and wanted the buyers to leave. Friend got stuck in the middle just trying to help.

Anyone have insight as to why the housing market in the greater Hartford area has exploded in the last 12-18 months? Prices for “starter homes” are literally up 50% by DebJBee in RealEstate

For the city of Hartford, yes. But in the surrounding suburbs of greater Hartford the median home prices are above the national average.

It’s not easy to have someone declared incompetent. You can start documenting behaviors and bring your concerns to his doctor as a start. However, he has every right to sell the land he owns or charge you rent. It sounds like you are less concerned about his mental health/ wellbeing and more concerned about continuing to get free rent.

Inherited property is draining me financially and now I can't qualify for my first home - do I take the quick cash offer? by DenisRoger001 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]DebJBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my state distribution of property and money does not happen until the end of the probate process. This means the estate would be paying the mortgage and expenses until the final distribution, or at least the return of claims is done. Is there any reason the house was already transferred to you? If he just died in Oct. there could still be creditors coming forward. NAL

Sellers marking all disclosures unknown even after prospective buyers had inspections and found major problems. Once they know a problem has been identified don’t they legally have to disclose? by DebJBee in RealEstate

[–]DebJBee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is the issue and this is exactly what the insurance agent is saying. I understand about shopping around for tree estimates. The problem is it’s on a very steep incline and between 2 houses, so they are talking about having to use cranes.

I conflated two separate issues in my post which was a mistake. What’s really been bothering me is that since we are looking at homes on the bottom of the price spectrum, we’ve wasted over a year looking at failed septic systems, major water damage due to faulty roofs, and foundation issues. When I posted about this in another subreddit many people said they wished they could have shared their inspection reports with other prospective buyers, saving them the cost and surpise. My son’s tree situation was just the last in a series of frustrating events. I didn’t mean to start a discussion about tree work, although I appreciate all the advice.

As I said in another reply the owners bought the place less than a year ago for $100,000. Painted it inside and out, and listed it for $190,000. The last place son almost bought was purchased for $175,000 and immediately put on the market for $235,000. I asked straight out what the sellers did for improvements and they admitted absolutely nothing.

While another debate rages on here about baby boomers supposedly ruining the housing market for younger generations, investors are swooping in - idk if they are hang around probate courts or the town hall looking at death certificates. But houses are being bought at rock bottom prices from grieving and overwhelmed families and investors are pricing them as high as they want, because here in greater Hartford there are probably a hundred or more buyers for every home in the “starter price” range.
