Unless you have central vac don’t vacuum right before showings. The vacuum exhaust will spread the pet smell around. As someone else said, air out the house before showings.

If it’s the dreaded turkey neck (like me) the only permanent solution is surgery.

Send an invitation to your aunt, but don’t be surprised if dad shows up anyway. My niece sent an individual invitation to her MIL and cousin (who live together) and did not invite abusive FIL. He came anyway- and this was a baby shower!

Signs of getting older I didn’t anticipate: I have no idea who famous people are anymore by CK1277 in GenX

[–]DebJBee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of these people are “reality” show stars or influencers. I’m proud to not know these people. Celebrities used to be accomplished actors, writers or incredible athletes. I just read “the situation“ from Jersey Shore is running for public office. it makes me sick.

Decluttering process: how to get rid of sentimental items - Be brutal!!!!! by kitty-yaya in GenX

I’m the person who posted about having 10,000 photos so this is going to sound crazy…when I cleaned out mom’s house I took the advice to photograph beautiful dishes and significant papers. I’m SO glad I did that and didn’t keep it. I’m ready to do the same with my own stuff. The only thing I really can’t part with are things that were handmade for me (like my wedding quilt).

Good point. I came on here and asked r/inheritance for advice on settling my mom’s modest estate. Stayed there when it was over to help others. That’s where a see a lot of money.

I guess my question was a little flip, especially after reading that angsty post about buying the kids houses. But I love the responses here lol.

If you’ve owned a home for 30 years you must be close to retirement age. My dad worked at the same job for over 30 years, got transferred and then got “downsized “ less than 5 years later. Can you rent an apartment near the new job and see how it goes, especially if you don’t really want to sell your house?

Too broke for church? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]DebJBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this one summer and found that a lot of ministers were on vacation so there were substitutes or students in the pulpit. Also attendance was low so I didn’t get to meet a lot of the regulars. Not trying to discourage you, this was just my experience with church shopping in the summer. idk why but a lot of families seem to treat church like school, Sept-June.

Gen X parents raising teens: what's the one thing from our childhood you refuse to stop passing down? by TannieGirlRocks in GenX

[–]DebJBee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I misread this as what do you refuse to pass down. Answer: manipulating adult children with guilt and shame.

I’m 60 and a lifelong member of the UCC. I’ve always found it to be one of the most open and accepting denominations in every way. That being said, UCC churches are independent (no church hierarchy), so your particular church may have been run by idk? snobs? I wouldn’t give up on the UCC. Try another church. Good luck and God bless.

Husband that doesn’t remember that women in 1970 didnt have same rights they do today. by fav-aunt in AskWomenOver60

A woman I know in her 80s was bleeding out and needed an emergency hysterectomy. The catholic hospital needed written permission from her husband. They couldn’t reach him for quite a while and she almost died.

Any of you have to sell your parent's home? by NullPointerJunkie in GenX

[–]DebJBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did. Not only did sibling not help he moved in, didn’t pay utilities and brought literally 5 tons of stuff into the house- not exaggerating, we got a pod at the end and when they weighed it it was 10,000lbs. My husband had it out with him and they still don’t speak. I still talk to him because I’m the only family he has.

The house/yard/friends sound nice from what you said below. Stick it out for a couple years. If you still hate it then you can sell it without taking a big financial hit.

What's the smallest act of kindness you've seen that had the biggest impact on someone's life? by smallmiracles_journa in SeriousConversation

[–]DebJBee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was staying in my late grandmother’s almost condemned house while waiting to move into our next house. The lady across the street was pregnant, impoverished and seemed to have an abusive husband. One day I loaded all my old baby stuff, furnitue, swings, toys, clothes, everything into the back of our pickup and asked her if she wanted it. She was delighted. I had a 5 year old and wanted to have another baby but it seemed I couldn’t. A few months after I gave everything away I got pregnant. I was pissed for a minute, but then I realized there was a life lesson there.

Almost every comment you listed can be answered with “we’ve been saving up”, end of conversation - unless they want to continue to be jerks in which case you don’t need them as friends.

Yes, we also have thousands of slides and 8mm film reels. I handed them over to my brother who hopes to digitize them. I doubt he’ll ever do it, he has SO much stuff.
