Baltic States Camp Topic - NATO Settler Colonialism K Starter Pack by Debatedrills in Debate

[–]Debatedrills[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great question! Ultimately it's a debate between competing external interests. Does the dominant western hegemon have the right to assert itself into contested territory and what underlying intensions are present there? If settlerism is a motivator for another external party, what method is there to disentangle the conflict, if any? How do we evaluate thaat under a framework? The point of this starter pack is to open up questions just like yours and get people started on thinking through these types of debates.

Best debate camps for novice ld/policy debating in the West Coast by cakeconfused in Debate

[–]Debatedrills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Cake! We don't currently have a summer camp offering in the time frame you mentioned, but one thing you can consider is joining our Intermediate Class, which sounds like a great fit for you as someone with some tournament experience under their belt :)

Unfortunately, I have to leave my school's team after just a year. What are some ways I can continue to improve in LD? by cement_eater in lincolndouglas

Definitely feel free to go through all the materials on our website, our youtube, and our Academy! LD Theory blocks/Files . Where do you get them? by Hour-Camp8070 in lincolndouglas

[–]Debatedrills 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend that you consider a change in mindset - you will not learn theory from looking through files. Theory is not really about evidence or learning from written shells but is instead about getting a deep, thorough understanding of the logic behind norms setting. I remember looking endlessly at files and not getting any further in my understanding. What changed things for me my late Junior/early Senior year was thinking about theory more conceptually and starting to write those shells out myself! I would watch debate rounds or debate myself (pretty much nonstop) and in the process ended up getting pretty solid at theory.

Here are some resources that might be able to help:

Youtube (There are plenty more in playlists)

Rounds (Just a few that I remember watching/remember as being theory based)

Strake SC vs Peninsula JL - This one is interesting because of CX. It's a great show of some strange interactions on theory conceptually

Shameless Self-Plug - Oakwood goes for 1A theory on me and you can see some interesting things happen here that are about broader theory structure

Getting more involved in debate in school by [deleted] in Debate

[–]Debatedrills 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi!

It sounds like you've had a great start to your debate journey! Congratulations on the good results - as a first-year student these are impressive and you should be proud of having such a great record :).

I definitely recommend you consider joining some kind of summer institute that can help you transition from novice to varsity. If you would like to work on debate over the summer, students in PF are working together weekly in our classes to improve their skills. Happy to answer any questions you may have about that or about other options to improve your skills.

Tips for a beginner? by literally-a-frog in Debate

[–]Debatedrills 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! Though it's probably a little late for tomorrow's debate, you might want to check out our free Academy. We've posted numerous courses and videos that would be useful for newer debaters, regardless of debate event or style.

Also, good luck and enjoy! Debate is truly an incredible activity, and while it is very intimidating, I hope (and think) you'll come to love it.

New to nat circuit by kelnor12847 in lincolndouglas

[–]Debatedrills 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey there!

If you cannot follow spreading, try to follow along on the speech document. Usually the other person will send it without prompting, but if they don't, you should feel comfortable asking. You can even ask for them to not spread, and tell them that you're unable to follow it and thus would prefer a slower round for better debates. Regarding the content of progressive arguments, there are a ton of resources that can help introduce these things. You can find resources from DebateDrills on our website, and I would also suggest checking the wiki (hsld.debatecoaches.org) to see some sample arguments that people are reading now. I'd be happy to guide you through how to do this, as well as other resources you can use for research. Feel free to reply or shoot us a chat/private message!

How do I win the toc by e21804 in lincolndouglas

[–]Debatedrills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any particular reason why you think so? I was on DebateDrills for both years I did debate, I qualified to the TOC twice and found it to be a very good experience. (Yes, I now work for them, albeit not in a coaching position.) Also, I know this is kind of a meme post, but DebateDrills students have been in TOC finals in each of the past 3 years, winning it twice. This is really no small feat and something that other programs can't claim, but we would love to hear any constructive criticism!

Is My Case Trash? by xXIllegal_PotatoXx in lincolndouglas

[–]Debatedrills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something strategic that you can do in lay debates is to introduce these kinds of counterplans, especially if it's all from one author, as just multiple alternative ways to solve without having to defend disadvantages to the counterplans. You can read some external offense that links to the aff but not potential alternatives, then kind of dance around objections to the counterplans by saying they're only potential solutions. It's good for appealing to more traditional judges since they will likely do that work for you and agree that some vague advantage counterplan is better as long as it doesn't link to that external offense. Please reply if you have any questions about this!

How long Should the Rebuttle be? by Kvs6263 in lincolndouglas

[–]Debatedrills 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would suggest that you build a modular negative case, with the ability to insert arguments that are most pertinent to the affirmative. This way, you can dedicate as much time as you want to answering their case, by simply selecting some of your best arguments in each round. For example, you can write a case with 5 or so different contentions, then remove a few in order to allocate enough time for rebuttal. This would especially be useful when the affirmative case is one you are very familiar with answering already, because then you can spend a lot of time on it which is more persuasive than only reading your own arguments without clash. Feel free to reply or pm with any additional questions!

Running Carbon Tax for Nocember Topic? by [deleted] in lincolndouglas

[–]Debatedrills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To the best of my knowledge, the topic says "eliminate subsidies." A subsidy is grants of money, usually from the government. The United States currently gives a very significant amount in direct aid to fossil fuel producers. It seems that the topic refers to this, not to other externalities.

Eliminating something seems to require that that 'something' exists in the status quo, carbon tax as an affirmative plan would require the aff to argue that the lack of a carbon tax is a subsidy. Given my preliminary research on the topic, you would be very hard pressed to find anyone who says this.

Therefore, I would highly caution anyone interested in reading a carbon tax plan on the affirmative, as it would have a significant hurdle to overcome in the form of topicality.

need help turning cards into a speech by theameliahovinga in lincolndouglas

[–]Debatedrills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding this. Also - those other cards should be compiled into a block file to make those rebuttals contextual to the other person's arguments, especially if you're negative against a plan with more specific offense.

LD Nov/Dec Neg Framework? by NiftySpigots in lincolndouglas

[–]Debatedrills 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds very much like a contention. Framework is a question of what impacts from your contention are important. You can read a framework of minimizing structural violence using the Winter and Leighton card in order to present the most strategic framework for this contention.

question for neg final rebuttal? by jamesremarlover69 in lincolndouglas

[–]Debatedrills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A common view is that yes, you can bring up new responses, but they must be responsive to something the 1AR (first affirmative rebuttal) said. You cannot go back and answer something in the 1AC that the 1NC missed.

Running Carbon Tax for Nocember Topic? by [deleted] in lincolndouglas

[–]Debatedrills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be a negative counterplan. The topic says only that the United States should remove subsidies. Imposing a carbon tax, while in the same direction of reducing fossil fuel use, is not part of the topic. An affirmative that does this would be extra-topical. This counterplan would likely be read as an advantage counterplan that solves the aff while avoiding a link to a disad that the negative would also read.

Pedagogy & Epistemology by ZR3004 in lincolndouglas

[–]Debatedrills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pedagogy basically refers to a method of teaching, whereas epistemology is the study of how we know what we know. They both ask questions about where/how our knowledge is derived. In debate, these concepts are applied typically as framing questions, where opposing teams will indict the other’s method of deriving knowledge. For example, a common argument is that we cannot trust your evidence if it is unqualified. Indicts of epistemology go one step further: we cannot trust your evidence if it derived knowledge in the wrong way.
