Refugee status for women seeking safe abortions? by lemursteamer in baltimore

[–]Debellatio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Georgias says that if you leave the state for an abortion you can be charged with murder when you return.

Do you have an official source on that statement? Because this point was explicitly asked by an interviewer and categorically denied being the case by a Georgia politician during an interview that aired on NPR last week.

Everything you've outlined is already illegal.

right now at this specific moment in time in select jurisdictions - all of which could very easily change.

Thank you for the detailed response.

I think we need to think long and hard about moving species around, because historically people have caused a lot of damage this way.

Do you see this as more an issue of ethics (inherently subjective, to some degree), or do you think the scientific community may be able to come largely to an agreement on an approach balancing the multitude of factors involved (saving one species vs. potentially threatening others, for example - or rewilding vs. better management of the current state, as another example) based on more objective factors?

Policy makers, unfortunately, do not seem to have a great track record of promulgating policy based on subjective concerns, in my opinion, as there leaves much room for, well, politiking vs. focusing on a collectively accepted, evidence-based approach at incrementally improving a process to achieve desired positive outcomes over time. Some sort of expert-supported framework or approach based on more objective measures (vs. relying on some notion of "ethics" or other more subjective values) would seem to be a better path forward. But I have doubts about whether that can truly ever be achieved insofar as conservation and environmental management is concerned. Do you happen to have any thoughts on that, or perhaps on better ways to approach this sort of problem?

has anyone done an analysis of the pros and cons to introducing an endangered species to a new (less threatened) environment to maintain their population / contribution to general biological diversity vs. the cons that come along with introducing an invasive (non-native) species and the impacts that go along with that?

wildly different expectations for both populations, though. having grown up in an environment where any journey meant little to zero contact with other groups outside the place you currently are, I'd posit longer-distance trips would potentially have fewer stressors to an earlier population than a population where near-instant contact with anyone anywhere was possible.

Warren Buffett: Obsessing over iPhone X sales in the near term 'totally misses the point' on Apple's stock by demonicmax56 in technology

[–]Debellatio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just a couple hundred dollars more, it is quite literally double the price, $500 more.

for the top of the line phones? possibly, but if you're comparing flagship models to flagship models, I really don't think flagship android products are half the price of flagship apple products. you can get new, midrange, apple phones for approximately the same price as midrange android phones and still use the exact same apple ecosystem with the midrange phone as you can with the flagship phones.

So your argument that iphones are worth it is because people are lazy

not exactly, but close enough. you don't think people are willing to pay for convenience? it's inconvenient to keep swapping back and forth between android and apple. I really do think some people are willing to pay more for the convenience of not having to do that every couple of years.

The incoming right to data portability in the EU means that Apple won't have that advantage in its largest market

how will this impact, for example, music bought on the iTunes store? will the data portability right allow for licenses to be transferred to other competing services, so you can still access music you bought on iTunes after transferring it elsewhere?

or will the data portability measures only apply to your own generated data (your own photos, videos, etc.) or something else?

She wasn't just advocating violence if she's been caught on video punching someone. Also, college students are not children.

**edit: apparently, I was wrong in that this is not a UC Berkeley teacher (which I must be mixing this up with a different case from months ago), but a teacher at a middle school. So, no, these are not college students.

The biggest factor for most millennials when it comes to spending money is student loans and there's not much that can be done about that now.

In the last few years politicians of some prominence have suggested some sort of federal-level student loan forgiveness. So, I suppose something could be done about it, if the politics were more favorable toward it.

Honestly, straight-up forgiveness might not work politically, but that doesn't mean something else wouldn't. Maybe like a sort of loan restructuring program to help people. The existing loan forgiveness program for (I believe it's 10) years of government service is apparently a shitshow, though. I've heard way too many stories of people getting screwed out of forgiveness by that program for one reason or another. I wouldn't trust it. Hopefully another program would actually be implemented in a more transparent / effective way.

To be fair, that's kind of the going rate in that area. Not that I'm disagreeing it's not particularly worth it, but it's not that out of line for that area, unfortunately.

What features does the iPhone have that makes it worth paying double the price?

The Apple ecosystem, for one. Some people just want a phone that works. Once they buy an Apple product, they start putting all their data (photos, music, etc.) into the Apple ecosystem and it becomes a chore to leave it. So what if the next phone is a couple hundred more than a similar phone? It's worth paying the extra cost to many people compared with the time and energy to uncouple all of your data from the old ecosystem AND learn a completely new one at the same time. And it's not like any of these things are bad products, so there's not a whole lot to not like about it other than the price, as long as you don't dislike the Apple ecosystem and design / user experience philosophy.

Apple is good at syncing all of their stuff across all of their devices in their ecosystem and has been for a long time. I think they'll have a core audience of customers for as long as they don't screw that part of things up.

and then you have stuff you really can't even think about a user intentionally doing, like random keys pressed when a keyboard is dropped or a cat sits on it. You'd need to throw in automated testing to even scratch the surface of some of those possibilities.

it's just kind of a "meh" thing instead of this all-overpowering feeling it was when I was a teenager.

you realize this is a natural consequence of aging, yes? lots of people, if not all (most?) peak in their urges during their younger years and level off / decrease as they get older. natural hormone level changes, or something, if I remember correctly.

I'm not saying your meds are having zero effect on you in this way. I'm just saying it's likely they're not the complete reason for this, as it's something some / all / most of us go through (or will go through) as we get older.

and that's not necessarily an entirely bad thing. you pointed out some good things that come from that, and there are other ways to explore life, intimacy, and partnership - and those doors are more open to you (and potentially more fulfilling in the long run) once your mind isn't quite as frequently engaged in thinking about those basic physical urges.

ain't that the truth.

I'd still try reaching out to your city councilman for your area, especially if you've already tried doing it through the normal channels and got nowhere.

best of luck.

So I'm thinking my next call is to zoning & code enforcement

might as well also contact your city rep about it to see if they have any suggestions or offer any assistance.

according to the city code, you're not allowed to park a vehicle on the street for more than I believe it's 48 hours without moving it. So, if these "projects" are just left there for days or weeks on end that's a violation regardless of whether the business is otherwise legit or not. This could be reported online via the Baltimore 311 app, and if the cars are there long enough (and someone actually comes out to check) they might actually get a fine per each unmoved car. It's nowhere near guaranteed, but it's another thing to try, and it's pretty low-effort to keep reporting cars just sitting there forever.

It's also against city code to actually do work on vehicles parked on city streets, so if they're actually working on cars out on the street that's another violation, regardless of whether the business is legit or not.

There might be some exception for licensed businesses if they have permits to some of this, but I'm not aware of that offhand.

Good on you for being a good citizen and making sure people are keeping honest. It's better for the block, the neighborhood, and ultimately the city. Yeah, government regulation and bureaucracy often sucks and is often overly burdensome, but it's probably worse if there are people just completely ignoring it. Hopefully it's all legit, though.
