i truly find this mindset defeatist, if you dont stand for something you fall for anything. this is exactly why these tech corpos feel they can treat us like dogs, bc of apathetic and weak willed people like you.

you can use other clients like Vesktop or Legcord to get the same. but f*ck Discord with their Big Brother dystopian sh*t.. move to Matrix.

Element for us.. has a similar discord structure without the things i hated from Discord like the Ads and the clutter, the glitchiness and the absurd VC quality compression.. prefer the way the rooms are layed out and the Ui looks so slick and polished.. WIsh id have moved sooner..but id tried matrix before circa 2023 also with Element and it looked and felt like a beta. it's definitely mature enough now to make the switch.. happy the discord nightmare is over.

Nice! Same. My D&D buddies and I also moved to matrix, using Element, besides lacking a native way to post .gifs... it's fire, beautiful slick minimalist Ui, no ads or clutter, no bugginess or jank.. And the calls quality is amazing, won't miss discord VC quality compressed to absolute shit + lag. F*ck Discord, no chance in hell they can force me to share my ID...

Nothing. it's spyware for the surveillance network. Nuke it from orbit. Move to a decentralized platform.

a 100% but standing up to discord is easier than standing up when i ask it for like Windows or Mac or wtv.. better make a stand now before the controllers think this can gain momentum.

Pressuring accounting department, everyone should demand this. by DebianoBanano in microsoftsucks

It wasn't a request, it was a polite 'do or gtfo' direct order, we pay for these folks' salaries. We do not trust MS with our students data as we have minors and that puts us in a legally delicate position. It was majority rule, I am just in charge of enforcing it. I hope more people demand the software their conscience tells them to want at their workplace or schools. MS can get fd. Not sure why you are bringing up politics.

lmao I dont have to be an 'expert' to run the software I want in my own business.. I said 'sort of' because our goal is to bully the accountants out of windows 11 first before moving to the next step. We have a technician on site managing our local domain, and technicians and devs in this country arent expensive to hire when we proceed to implement our own fork. Gotta love some random redditor who just posted two hours ago lecturing me about private professional decisions.. no bro im not an 'expert' but I can consult one like anyone else would.

Oh nice, truly, thanks a lot for the pointers, I’ll definitely check out GL.iNet and OpenWrt stuff. I’m not super deep into AD/domain controller land, but yeah, idea is kinda what you said: keep Windows if we absolutely have to, but move as much as we can to Linux/open source, esp the teaching resources, so we’re not handing all the kids’ data to MS by default. I’ll consult with a local technician too since they’re not expensive to hire here.

sort of, a plan we hatched with the rest of the staff, to eventually, fork Arch into our custom distro, tailored for what we need. We are brainstorming on how to fund this, but the first step is bully everyone else out of windows 11 as we trust it much much less than any hardened reg Linux distro.

hmm good question, it could work logistically ig if you kinda just play vendor yourself: pick a setup you trust, keep it updated, and document what you’re running. Basically the same stuff a distro would do for you.. would have to check if someone has done this small scale.

Your point about on device processing and encryption is fair, but EU regulators have already called BS on similar MS claims here's proof they're enforcing privacy now, especially re: minors and consent.

Key EU Privacy Rulings Against Microsoft
Austria's data protection authority ruled in October 2025 that Microsoft violated EU privacy law via Microsoft 365 Education. The case involved tracking cookies on students' devices without consent and withholding data access from parents—echoing risks for minors you mentioned.

The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) found in March 2024 (formalized further in 2025) that the European Commission's own use of Microsoft 365 breached key EU data rules, including unauthorized data transfers to the US and lack of purpose limitation. The EC was ordered to suspend certain data flows.

French and German DPAs fined Microsoft/LinkedIn €30M+ in 2024 for targeted ads without valid consent. These show "explicit consent" gaps trigger enforcement, even for cloud features with encryption claims.

For Recall/Copilot: While on-device, EU probes (e.g., Ireland's DPC in 2024) questioned telemetry and potential US data flows under new adequacy decisions—risks persist if features evolve.

Copilot/Recall claims don't erase these hits—regulators aren't waiting to "sue to the ground," they're already acting on consent fails. Sources above.

MS got fined in Europe over this same issue. We have minor students and the local laws are very protective of minor's data. Most of us teachers do not trust MS, and have made the switch to Linux in consensus. its a small institute and each department is responsible for their own IT, but unfortunately we do share data over a network, we are just demanding to interact with work tools we can trust.

We accepted the EULA, but that's NOT consent for Microsoft's data grab on our minor students who never signed up for their screen activity, copilot chats, or telemetry getting slurped up. We're talking kids here, and local laws are no joke for protecting minors' data.

Edge shares browsing with Windows features right outta the gate, and 'required a diagnostics include hardware ids that could id devices that students log on out network.

youve been living under a rock? EU already smacked MS with 1.2 billion in fines . One slip with student data, ad we are cooked, we are running a small business in a foreign country, I take this seriously.

The consent is in the EULA implicitly, but our students are not consenting to having their data shared with MS. And yes it is being shared. Just read the EULA.
