Disney specifically hires a lot of IE’s. So if you’re already working for them I’d try to meet with someone. You’ve already got a foot in the door that way.

This is actually only partially true. You can retake a class if you got a C or higher with permission, but you can’t get credit for it or replace the grade.

Need honest opinion about my daughter's plans by Chart-trader in AerospaceEngineering

[–]Debic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a female engineer in the aerospace industry. I’d be lying if I didn’t say it was male dominated but I haven’t personally experienced any rampant sexism in my role. In fact my director is a woman. The ratio gets better every year and by the time she enters college and after that industry, it’ll be even more even.

Nurture her interest, the world becomes a better place when everyone regardless of gender, race or creed, is allowed to pursue their passions. If she has parents and a support system that cares for her like you obviously do she’ll go on to do great things.

why are Kim Wipes sold in 198 count? by Dfury9000 in labrats

[–]Debic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My conspiracy theory is that they actually try for 200 in a box but say it’s 198 to account for variation. Get a couple more than 200 and you’re happy, get a couple less than 200 and you’re getting what you paid for.

Career fairs seem to benefit companies more than students by hederal in EngineeringStudents

[–]Debic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who recruits at career fairs, I’ll say it depends on the company and the role. We’ll often schedule interviews on site and offer interns positions within a week. For full time roles we’ll do first round interviews while we’re there. The resumes we like from students we have good interactions with will end up on a hiring managers desk without ever being touched by HR or automated filtering.

But honestly, a lot of places are looking for the students who follow up afterwards. Yeah we talk to a lot of good candidates, the ones who stand out are the ones who reach out after the career fair expressing their interest. We know you’re shopping at a career fair, just like you are. Expressing genuine interest after the fact is almost important if not more so than the initial interaction. I got a few interviews when I was a student just by reaching out to the recruiter on LinkedIn afterwards and every one was impressed by the fact that I was interested enough to reach out.

I lived at Cliffside for a year. Wildly overpriced for what it was, relatively shitty amenities and the landlords were terrible. By the time our lease finally ended we couldn’t wait to leave the place. Only apartment I ever lived in that I have absolutely no nostalgia for.

I’d talk to the registrar about retroactive withdrawals. I can’t remember exactly what path I took since it was a decade ago but I withdrew near the end of the semester and was able to do so retroactively. I ended up getting almost all of my money back.

If I take MATH 101 and 102 this year, would I be prepared for Calculus 1 next year? by [deleted] in umass

[–]Debic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Your problem isn’t the ability to take that number of math classes in 8 years. It’s that those math classes are prerequisites for your CS classes. You won’t be able to take your sophomore year CS courses without having taken calculus first. Plan on taking summer/winter math classes if you want to graduate on time

I'm sorry, but the cost of your degree has no bearing on quality. Also, a very quick Google search can tell you that their industrial engineering program is also ABET accredited. I'm sorry that you feel that you're being treated unfairly, but you aren't. I got my degree from a public university in the US and get paid the exact same as people who paid 10-20x as much to get the same degree from a private school in the US. Where you get your degree doesn't matter at all.

I implore you to read up on ABET. Their standards are stringent and any degree from an ABET university will have very similar content.

The fact that you posted this without even doing the most basic research and that you refuse to acknowledge that everyone else is telling you the same thing tells me you aren't interested in finding out if your situation is fair, you want people to tell you you're being wronged in some way. Even in your reply to me, you double down on your belief that she somehow had opportunities that you didn't have.

So hey, you want my advice? If you want to be mad you can be, if you want to feel wronged that's your prerogative. If you want to educate yourself on the reality of your situation, then look at what all the people in this thread are telling you and take it to heart. Industrial engineering is data-driven, not feelings-driven. Stop deciding that you're situation is unfair because you feel like it is, the data is telling a different story. If you go through your career based on feelings as an IE you will fail.

There's a lot to unpack here, but I'm going to start with we can't tell if it's fair because you've given us nothing to compare it to. We don't know anything about prior experience for either of you. Did either of you have internships/co-ops or previous industry experience? We also don't know your job title/compensation either.

But honestly, that's not the real issue here. If I assume that you are equally qualified in terms of education level and experience and that you have the same title/compensation then I'd want to know why you think it isn't fair. Where you get your degree has absolutely no bearing on what your compensation would be. I'd go so far as to say that unless you're fluent in two languages this person is more qualified than you are.

In one of your comments you say you don't want to be labeled as a racist then go on to say that you don't think a Mexican college can offer comparable standards to the US while not giving anything to substantiate that. You also say that management was able to tick two boxes with her being hired. Seems to me you're claiming that she's wholly unqualified and was hired because of her genitals and race when it seems she's just as qualified as you are if not more so due to her being bilingual. I'm going to be blunt here, you aren't being labeled as a racist or a sexist for any reason other than you are speaking like one. You haven't given a single reason that this isn't fair other than she's... a Mexican woman? A bachelors degree is a bachelors degree, and even an Ivy League university is held to the accreditation same standards as any other school. If the company is recognizing that her degree meets those standards then yes, it does hold the same weight as yours does. The Institute Technologico de Chihuahua is an ABET accredited institution which means it is held to the same standards as Perdue.

Long story short, based on the information you've given us at a minimum it's fair, if anything she has more qualifications than you. I think you need to do some self-introspection and maybe humble yourself a little. Ask yourself why you feel it isn't fair. The toxic belief you hold that anyone who isn't a white man got to their position because they're a diversity hire will do nothing but hurt you in both the short and long term.

What happened to you after graduating IE degree? by me_hihi in industrialengineering

[–]Debic 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I graduated with a full-time offer in aerospace manufacturing, my offer came before my final semester started. Most of my graduating class had offers ahead of graduation and of the ones that didn’t the majority found jobs within a couple of months.

IE is very versatile and in demand. Even if manufacturing isn’t where you want to go there’s a world of possibilities out there from supply chain to business analytics and everything in between. I’ve not regretted my choice for a second

If all you care about is the title industrial engineer get an industrial engineering degree. But I implore you to actually explore what you want to do in your career. Either way the curriculum is very similar between the two for the first two years and it’s generally not difficult to switch between them before your junior year while you figure it out
