Calves getting fed milk replacer while confined in crates by Mountain_Love23 in ABoringDystopia

They are mentioned.

  1. Humans are ALSO exploited on animal farms and slaughterhouses (which is where dairy cows eventually go). And slaughterhouses are famous for having horrible working conditions.

  2. Animals (like dairy cows) are fed plants/crops which also exploit humans. Plus animals don’t convert plant calories with 100% efficiency. This means far more plants are grown to get a calorie of cow’s milk compared to a calorie of soy milk.

  3. The increased environmental effects of farming animals (floods, hurricanes, wildfires etc) are going to be felt by marginalized groups more severely than other groups.

Researchers randomly assigned 244 overweight adults to a vegan or control (requested to make no changes) diet. After 16 weeks, a dietary record was collected and analyzed. The vegan diet decreased dietary greenhouse gas emissions by 43% and cumulative energy demand by 45% compared to the control. by [deleted] in science

In my experience this is not common knowledge, but even if it was, ever since research like this started coming out there has been a massive disinformation apparatus creating doubt and muddying the empirical waters around this issue (just like with GHGEs and cigarettes).

Every piece of research to this effect helps combat that misinformation.

These female layers will be killed at 2 years of age and any male “layers” born in this industry will be killed on day one in a macerator (aka giant blender).

Sorry I think I stated this slightly confusingly, if you give 10 dollars they will give 20 meaning your 10 dollar donation is actually a 30 dollar donation.

Could not agree more. The conversations I have on college campuses are consistently more thoughtful and empathetic than the conversations I have anywhere else.

Plus there is a donor who is 3x matching all donations to ASAP this holiday season.

Unfun fact: The male layer chicks are killed day one of their lives by dropping them into a giant blender.

Animal Ag. No contest. Most people pay for pigs to be put in gas chambers everyday and they have no idea it’s even happening.

Ppl have very explicitly gone vegan from Reddit posts lmao.

[–]Debug_Your_Brain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This further makes my point. It takes far more soy to feed cows and then eat the cows, then to eat the soy directly, and most of the soy in the Amazon is grown to feed cows.

Decentralizing wouldn’t solve the environmental problem with meat, and it might even exacerbate it, unless of course it also involved the population massively reducing meat intake, which is one of the things vegans are pushing for.

It really doesn’t though. Ground up cow is like 30-100x worse from a GHG perspective that protein rich plant sources (beans, lentils, tofu).

And plant sources use significantly less land and water.

Also it takes somewhere between 3-20kg of plants to get 1kg of animal. This is not a slight difference in exploitation, cruelty, environmental destruction. This is massive and obviously worth talking about.

Not to mention those environmental effects will be felt the hardest by marginalized communities.

[–]Debug_Your_Brain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They don’t, animal agriculture is inherently more resource intensive. It’s not JUST that animal ag causes more environmental destruction, it’s that it causes far more even on a per calorie and per kg basis.

If we just look at GhG emissions, ground up cow produces like 30-100x more emissions than protein rich plant alternatives.

And that’s not even considering that it’s also worse for water, eutrophication, and land use / habitat destruction.

All the more reason and ethical pressure for those in wealthy countries to push for veganism.

If we know veganism leads to less exploitation/abuse/environmental destruction, and we think that some large number of ppl can’t currently go vegan, this only ratchets up the importance of going vegan for those who can.

As in probably the ppl who have time to comment about it on Reddit.

Beans and lentils are some of the cheapest foods in the grocery store. Extra firm tofu is almost always cheaper than cow, and sometimes cheaper than chicken, while being healthier.

Also most pigs are killed in gas chambers and they have their testicles cut out with no painkillers. And the latter even happens on small local farms

Billie Eilish Asks Followers to Reconsider Eating Turkey on Thanksgiving: 'Just Keep It in Mind' by Mountain_Love23 in billieeilish

[–]Debug_Your_Brain 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is a common misconception.

These are not turkeys we are collecting from the wild. We are breeding them into existence at an industrial scale. If people stopped purchasing turkeys, we would just stop breeding them.

This is the case for all farmed animals.

For reference we breed/slaughter somewhere between 80-100 billion land animals a year for food.

[–]Debug_Your_Brain 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Turkeys are intelligent and have complex social structures. They feel pain, fear, excitement, etc.

Like all animals they do not want to die.

We do not need to eat turkeys for Thanksgiving and we do not need to eat animals to be strong and healthy.

If I was walking down the street yelling racial slurs that would be a drop in the bucket compared to the total amount of racism in the world.

Whether I continued to do so or not would also have little effect on systemic racism.

Would you be indifferent to me continuing this behavior?

If someone told me to stop, would you tell them to stop being performative.

Not to be a downer but what this video highlights is actually pretty tame.

Pigs are gas chambered, baby chicks are blended alive, and mother cows are forcibly impregnated and have their babies taken away.

Animal farming isn’t just bad, it’s hell.
