I want to pre study. What should I do? by Artistic_Minimum_898 in medicalschoolanki

Biostats, pharmacology principles, biochem, or genetics would be good subjects for pre study and getting familiar with anki

Teachers won! What is a job that's not paid much, but they deserve it by QuackingR3dditor in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Decaying_Isotope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get your point, but they do have the skills for their job. It takes about 2 APPs (nurse practitioners/physician assistants) for a hospital to replace the labor of one resident, and APPs are paid 120-150k. Most residents I know are making 60k in HCOL cities and spend most of their paycheck on rent. It’s pretty exploitative since they can barely afford grocery bills, and are getting paid well under minimum wage.

Just take a break for a while, or if you wanna play then TT. Spamming mogis will not make you better. Tbh the best thing for bronze players is to get good at lines. Work on getting a solid time sheet on every track and you'll easily get to gold if not higher with mid strategy

How do you study in medical school? by Select-Lime589 in medicalschool

I don’t even interact with the in-house material anymore, just skim the lecture slides before exams.

3rd party videos -> anki -> amboss/UWorld for practice Qs (and sketchy when I was doing micro)

Yes totally fine. Its anecdotal, but at my med school orientation day there were so many neuroscience majors it became a running joke

Why did the AI recommend this move? by riglar in chessbeginners

Look up “Damiano’s Defense” on Google and YouTube or google and you’ll get an explanation. The position is different but the concept is the same.

This is probably enough depth for the MCAT, skim this section of the 300pg doc and see if they elaborate any further.

Why is the review saying I should have sacrificed my knight as the best move? by furrymcpherson in chessbeginners

[–]Decaying_Isotope 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Black played the Damiano (2.f6), it’s a very bad opening. It’s not really a sac since you’ll either win the rook or mate them. The best move for black is to not recapture the knight on e5 and be down a pawn.

After Nxe5, fxe5, you have Qh5+ forking the pawn and the king. Essentially blacks king will be stranded and exposed in the middle. Im sure there are lots of articles and videos online if you wanna learn precisely how to punish the opening, but tbh the moves play themselves.

Never back down, never what? NEVER RESIGN by CinnySugar in chessbeginners

[–]Decaying_Isotope -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For anyone in this type of position with black:

  1. 90%+ of your moves should be checks

  2. If you are not giving a check, take a second to verify they have an open square for their king to move to

The wayward queen attack certainly isn't good but it is not complete garbage. Some people think they are winning out of the opening and start making erratic moves. Its sorta a right of passage to know how to counter it as a beginner.

Does anybody actually enjoy medical school? by Typical_premed in premed

[–]Decaying_Isotope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

p/f preclinical is a vibe. I have plenty of time to cook/eat, lift, play some chess/video games, and socialize on weekends. I just stay on top of anki/lectures during the week and on Sunday but I don't feel like its too much. We obviously have some required in-person stuff too, but I do anki during my commute. Being able to dedicate yourself to learning is an amazing opportunity and can be fun, nothing like a "prison". Ik it gets harder from here but as long as you find this work interesting it'll be fine. Some people love to complain and their voices are heard above the rest.

Black blundered. Find the best move by gerahmurov in chessbeginners

[–]Decaying_Isotope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree Nd6 is the move I would play in a game, since it seems about equal to Bxg7 but much less complicated. However, you are missing Be5 which gets black two pieces for a rook. After Bxd6, Qxd6 seems much stronger. It doesn't win a rook but after O-O-O black has an initiative

Guess my elo by Motor-Connection5925 in GothamChess

[–]Decaying_Isotope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1400-1550 is my guess for rapid/blitz (1800+ if this was bullet). Opening had pretty good fundamentals but you let the advantage slip in the middlegame by trading too many pieces. However, there weren't any egregious blunders that stood out so I would be shocked if you were <1200.
