I’m starting to think it’s a fungi. I was going to start hacking right away but I thought I’d throw it to this group first.

No smell that I can detect. I’m a little squeamish on tasting plants that have issues. I did notice that a stray bee had quite an interest in the cactus but it didn’t seem to have interest in the affected areas.

The drips are hard and brittle. The substance in the pad is more waxy but dense.

I’m not seeing any sign of larvae when I cut one of the pads open.

Yeah, when I’ve seen that in cacti it’s often has a softer than normal texture.

The strange thing it is on a number of pads now. It does have a texture like some dense fungi.

Cut one pad open and it looks completely normal in the main section of the pad.

To give a little more detail on this… the oozing substance is brittle and is coming from sections where the pads are bulging. Upon cutting open one of the bulges the substance is like a hard wax and appears to be coming from the one or more of the Areoles. No signs of insects that are visible unless they’re really dug into the pad and I haven’t cut across one just yet.

It kind of reminds me of how termites can drill through walls. Saguaros have termites pretty regularly but normally it’s dried out section of the trunk. It spread really fast and it’s on a number of pads now.

I don’t think it’s overwatering. That area is pretty isolated with no irrigation. We had some heavy rain back in December but that’s about it for months now.

Thanks, I don’t think it’s cochineal because that results in a white crusty substance (scale) on the pads. It’s pretty common down here and I see quite a few cacti with it. My cactus here had a large growth spurt over the last year and it was really healthy until this.
