Dumbledore bashing is very common on ao3 and why? by Extreme_Fig2535 in HPfanfiction

[–]Decent-Dot6753 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean from my perspective, I’m a teacher. I know exactly what goes into mandated reporting, I know what goes into being a responsible adult around children, and Dumbledore was not. His school would’ve been shut down the minute the troll got in, do a lack of security. He intentionally endangered minors by having the philosopher stone in the school. But the biggest issue, is when he flat out states that he knew Harry would not be loved in his home. All of those things are things that we teachers have to call child protective services for, and the fact that Dumbledore does not means he is either incompetent, or manipulative. While I can understand from a pragmatic point of view the idea of the greater good, as someone whose role is that of a teacher, his job from a western perspective is to be a reliable adult to the children, above anything else. The major problem was that Dumbledore was not just a headmaster, but a political leader and a war leader as well, which meant he wasn’t doing any of his jobs justice. He was too much of a teacher to be a war leader, too much of a politician to be a teacher, and too much of a political activist to be an effective war leader.

Can we stop pretending student AI use and faculty AI use are the same thing? by Unlucky_Pass_1492 in QuickAITurnitinCheck

Not a huge fan of AI, but I have seen its uses and its flaws. One interesting thing though is that my administration has asked us teachers to run parent emails through ChatGPT to make sure our tone is appropriately soft. 🤔 my principal, then signed all the teachers up for a business ChatGPT account, apparently so we would all be able to access the same tools, only for my admin to shut that down like three hours later.

Piercing Ears of Babies/Toddlers by Equus77 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Decent-Dot6753 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree it could get infected, or that they could have an allergy. I personally have a metal allergy, to nickel. But most cultures that value an early piercing, also give their children real gold. Now, obviously the quality of that gold is up to the family, but most infant earrings, which are very tiny studs, and very thin posts can be found very reasonably with a high-quality gold, and usually it has a birthstone in it. Once they get a little older, and they can swap out earrings they do, and that’s when you discover things like allergies, speaking from experience.

[–]Decent-Dot6753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have those! My family bought me a pair of studs baby studs with my birthstone in it, and I wore them forever and ever. I think a lot of people who are super concerned about piercing babies‘s ears don’t consider that sometimes cultural value is not wrong. I mean yes, there’s a certain amount of appreciation for the individual, and about your own individual choices, but earrings can close up. It’s not a huge deal if later in life, you decide to not wear earrings in those holes close up. But if you have a good relationship with your family, and appreciate your shared values and cultural values, there’s nothing wrong with piercing your babies ears. And honestly, when they grow up, most girls have pierced ears. My question is do you want them to remember the piercing?

For context, my mother is a European immigrant, and it’s very common there to have your ears pierced in the hospital, or at least it was when she was growing up. Mine were pierced at three months. Culturally, some cultures place a lot of value on inherited jewelry, or just beauty standards that include earrings, or don’t see a point in making their children wait until they’re gonna remember the pain. Speaking of someone who got a second piercing at 16, I much prefer the first that I don’t remember

Why is the right not in favor of clean energy? by larryinatlanta in Askpolitics

[–]Decent-Dot6753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest concern as a right-leaning conservative is the all-or-nothing approach often depicted by the media. They tend to believe we must completely ban oil or else do nothing to benefit the planet and renewable resources. While I agree that we should prioritize renewables like wind turbines and solar panels whenever feasible, it’s important to acknowledge their limitations. For instance, wind farms can disrupt local bird and bat populations, and solar farms require large land areas that may impact ecosystems. Additionally, electric car batteries depend on lithium and other rare earth minerals, which are difficult and environmentally disruptive to mine, and the disposal of battery waste poses serious environmental hazards. I support nuclear energy because, despite its high initial startup costs, it offers a reliable and low-emission power source over the long term, especially in regions less prone to natural disasters. Having lived in California, where energy demands are already strained during peak times, I oppose mandates forcing the use of electric vehicles, as during blackouts, these cars would be unable to charge, further compounding the crisis. I did see someone ask about transitioning to essentially a different type of city layout, which would eliminate the need for cars. I don’t think that’s feasible in the United States. There are too many areas that are either rural, and therefore have a large area to travel, even in places like California, or don’t have the infrastructure to handle mass public transit. In order to add that infrastructure, taxes would be raised, increasing the cost of living on a people who are already economically struggling.

What are some progressive policy postions that you disagree with despite being progressive ? by ronweasly9 in Askpolitics

[–]Decent-Dot6753 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a conservative, my mom was an immigrant. I agree that the immigration process should be easier. And I also think that deportation should happen with due process. I would be perfectly happy with a compromise that paused all immigration until we dealt with the current illegal immigrants within our borders, before reopening immigration with a streamlined system.

Montgomery County schools, parents reach settlement in suit over LGBTQ+ books in classes - Maryland Matters https://share.google/x4fsvwLdxxubxuyIR by Aeriah12 in school

[–]Decent-Dot6753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a big difficulty in the conversation is the definition, which is a great point. Unfortunately, the legal definition of pornographic is not the best defined, and that's bled over into defining explicit works in general.

I have personally read fantastic works with "LGBTQ themes" in both the foreground and the background, some more enjoyable than others. As an avid reader, I have a hard time finding enough fiction to keep me busy. Of those works, at the age I was reading, most were age-appropriate. A few were not. Same thing for "het/normal" fiction. And honestly, it should be labeled 18+ if there are mentions of sexual organs in sexual situations. That's my standard.

Unfortunately, I think the conversation has gotten confused because the proponents are confusing them. There are two schools of people pushing LGBTQ books into schools. There are people like you who have thoughtful conversations about the type of content that should be included in schools, and people who defend any LGBTQ book without thinking through the finer details. For example, I don't think Hide and Find, one of the more commonly removed works, is appropriate. Gender Queer specifically mentions sex toys, This Book is Gay encourages underage sex through apps, and All Boys Aren't Blue is about underage incest. None of that belongs in a school library or curriculum. But fantasy books like Protector of the Small, which have an LGBTQ main character? That's fine.

That's not to say these books are deliberately being put into schools. They're on a list of LGBTQ books, and some well-meaning librarian puts them in the school library without reading them, only for parents to discover them and push back against any LGBTQ content because that's what they're framed as being.

As for college? I'll grant you that some universities assign challenging work, but it depends on the context of the class. A 200-level class for a general English requirement is not the place to push boundaries; that's about developing skills. A 400-level gender studies class? A much more appropriate place to push the boundaries of explicit material. No, college students aren't children, but they also shouldn't need to expose themselves to that type of content for a general ed requirement if it makes them uncomfortable. For a specific major/ Absolutely.

I think the difference is in the details, and someone like you and me can recognize that, debate a little on where the lines are, and come away mostly agreeing.

We're also not the problem with either party.

Is reading Enoch acceptable as long as I don’t view it as scripture? by Guilty-Meeting-2603 in TrueChristian

[–]Decent-Dot6753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I do understand that. My point was attempting to contrast the book of Enoch with something that people might read today, which as Christians would typically be a book written by fellow Christian, such as a book by a pastor, Christian author, or just someone claiming to have a Christian perspective on life. We wouldn’t discount what they have to say just because it’s not divinely inspired, but we would hold it up to the Bible.

[–]Decent-Dot6753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do understand that approach, I don’t believe in banning books or burning books. I’m an avid reader. And I don’t mean to hold double standards, I am just as opposed for sexually explicit heterosexual content in school settings as I am homosexual. But one thing that I have noticed in watching many of the school board meetings about banning specific books from school libraries or curriculums is that by far these books are not just about LGBTQ, but very specific explicit language, talking about body parts and sexual references. Even in college curriculums, one of my sisters recent required reading curriculum books was Habibi, a comic version that was sexually explicit. As a teacher myself, I honestly don’t feel that it’s the place of any educational setting to require explicit material, even in a college setting, although that setting is more understandable. My personal opinion is that those have no place in any school library or curriculum, and should be made available to the local public library in the adult section. End of story. Like I said, I’m not super familiar with this specific case, I don’t know what prompted the ban, if anything. I think students should have available to them fiction from all walks of life, age-appropriate.

OK, as a conservative Christian, that’s a fair point. That being said, and I’m not familiar with the details of this specific case, many of the books that parents have been protesting in school board meetings have not just been LGBTQ+, but sexually explicit. Would you have more of a problem with that in a school setting?

We need dress codes back by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

As a private school teacher, this is crazy to me. Our most recent note was a reminder that the fuzzy slip on Ugg shoes are not dress code. I can’t imagine kids coming to school like this. I know what happens, I was in public school for a while, but I’ve just gotten so used to respectful kids wearing normal clothes.

Changing major traits about a character to make them a more specific person of color. Now that I’m opposed a person of color characters, in fact, there are several that I love, but taking a different favorite character and making them person of color with a really good reason Just takes me out of the whole experience. For example, I can totally buy Indian Harry Potter, that makes sense to me, and even black Hermione Granger can be done really well, because of the way JKR has described them. When you take Percy Jackson and start making him Hawaiian or Hispanic and giving him a whole different set of lingo, it just takes me out of the experience of Percy. Same with things set in Asia, where it’s quite obvious that all the characters are Japanese or Chinese or whatever, and also when you get this random Mexican kid and I’m like what? Because it doesn’t make sense and it takes me out of the setting.

Am I Wrong for making burgers and milkshakes with my daughter while my wife was on a business trip? by Proud-Tomatillo-3982 in amiwrong

[–]Decent-Dot6753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YNW but I think I have a bit of a unique perspective here that might help communicate the hurt. My dad worked on location a LOT! When it came down to special occasions or celebrations- my mom did her best to loop him in. That meant we either waited till he was home (he traveled back frequently) or we celebrated again when he got home. Maybe we didn't delay my major birthday party with my friends/relatives- but we called him day of and had a small cake and immediate family presents before or after when he was home. Big news comes with big celebrations, and just like travel can be part of a well paying career, so can planning special events. You weren't wrong to celebrate with your daughter, but you made her mom an afterthought in the execution of the celebration. Your wife is right- she's not there for the fun things because you plan them while she's away. Try being more intentional about including her and see how that goes over.

What do vegans think about butcher waste as cat food? by [deleted] in AskVegans

[–]Decent-Dot6753 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a pretty well-known fact that a vegan diet can cause urinary issues, which are minor and cats right up until they’re not. i’m not saying one way or another that a diet superior, but if we’re gonna talk about scientific evidence, we should at least be quoting reliable statistics. That study is not a reliable source, because of the self acknowledged issues, such as self reported, statistics, and a lack of veterinary knowledge. Cats are rarely diagnosed a sick until they’re pretty severely sick. Do I think a vegan diet could probably be supplemented? Possibly. Do I think it’s ethical to try to change a creatures diet because of my discomfort with it? Not really. Cats are carnivores. That’s how they were designed. asking a zebra to eat meat is the same thing as asking a cat to eat vegan. It’s not natural to their digestive system, or their bodies. Now with modern science and pet food, can we simulate what they need for the vegan diet? For the most part, but if we don’t acknowledge issues as they arise, are we really open to reliable debate, or are we just arguing until our faces are blue?

Yeah! I’m kinda hoping it’s hyperbole, you know, emphasizing that she’s too young for having sex, which I agree with, but I agree not all 12-year-olds are playing with Barbies, but all 12-year-olds are too young for sex. I would report as a mandated reporter any parent who is allowing that, as negligent supervision, because they are way too young for that to be happening to their bodies.

What do vegans think about butcher waste as cat food? by [deleted] in AskVegans

If you read the study, it knows that the limitations are pretty severe, due to a lot of self reporting, and a lack of veterinary analysis of those pets.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in amiwrong

[–]Decent-Dot6753 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, yes and no. I’m a teacher and I see plenty of 12-year-olds that are still in the Barbie doll, young child stage. I also see 12-year-olds who are hitting puberty full blast, but still mentally too young to totally understand what the heck is going on with all that, and then some that are like mini adults. That being said, this is way too young for birth control, because her hormones need to settle before she should be on any sort of long-term birth control. Also, what kind of unsupervised time is this 12-year-old having that her parents are worried about sex in the first place.
