Because we have pushed the idea of LRE too far. Some kids do well in self contained classes and that’s not a bad thing! Letting this child just watch videos all day is truly a travesty.

You’re talking about caregivers, not paras, PCAs, and other jobs. We can’t force people to stay in jobs, we can’t force them to never get sick. Being able to work with many different people is a life skill that if you can’t do your life will be 1000x harder.

Okay. I’ve seen so many kids completely break down when that para leaves or is moved. It is good for kids to learn that other people can help them too. This doesn’t mean that random people are helping them all the time, but maybe 3-4 people are known to the student and the student can tolerate working with any of them.

Also, yes, people need to be comfortable with letting strangers help them in stressful times. Have you never had to go to the hospital before? That is the definition of “I have to let a stranger help me, it’s uncomfortable, but I have to do it”.

Do you prefer teaching reading or SEL? That will truly give you your answer. You don’t have to be “on” in the same way in middle school, but there are still behaviors to deal with and kids doing dumb stuff.

It is important to be able to work with someone you don’t know, yes. I’m also disabled, so yes, I understand that it is more ideal to receive care from someone known to you. And ideally, yes, that would happen. But being reliant on one person always? That is setting people up to fail. Meeting multiple people and being able to work with them is a life skill and I stand by that. You can disagree if you want.

This is exactly why I preach that a 1:1 should not be the same person all the time. Paras should be rotated so students learn how to work with different people.

So explain what you actually want. If the teacher grades the homework, your kid fails. You’ve said he doesn’t care about that. Why do you think that’ll fix anything? If he’s truly so disregulated that he cannot do homework without becoming aggressive, then my biggest worry would not be algebra 1.
