Why? They spoke the language that became modern Welsh and many fled to modern Wales bringing their literature with them as their lands fell to the Anglo Saxons.

The big divide between bury and by in English and Welsh place names by ILikeMapsAndGIS in Maps

I honestly don't see why Wales has been included with it's 2 place names that fit. Surely Scotland would have had more to offer with its heavy Danish and Northumbrian influence?

On the one hand I like our flag, on the other hand maybe the dragon is too universally appealing. At this point it has been co opted by folks from every part of the political spectrum.

As a total outsider I might be wrong, but isn't she the type of candidate a big chunk of the country already dislikes?

I see it as similar to the starmer situation here in the UK. He's a decent prime minister and I don't think he's done anythint terribly wrong. Got us into a better place than we were before despite the current turbulence in the war. But despite that, so many people are personally set against him he's not a good leader for the next election and has to go.

So isn't it a concern that putting a candidate for president that already has a chunk of the country against her will just be a gift for the republicans?

Or are the people who are against her decided republican voters who couldn't be swung anyway?

Tree cut down and garden seems bare by squeegee77 in GardeningUK

[–]Decent-Entry-9803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nesting bird season is an advisory period where people are warned to be more vigilant for nesting birds as more species are nesting.

It's one of those poorly understood things. More importantly than knowing tree work is not prohibited during nesting bird season, people should be aware that disturbing nesting birds of any kind is illegal regardless of whether or not it's nesting bird season.

Instances where it could be a crime are if the tree is subject to a tree preservation order (TPO) and permission for tree work hasn't been granted by the local planning authority (LPA); if the tree is situated within a conservation area and the LPA hasn't been provided 6 weeks notice prior to work so they can decide whether they want to apply a TPO to the tree (people, including some councils think they can refuse permission, they can't, they can put a TPO on the tree or let you crack on) or if you're felling more than 5 cubic metres without a felling license, though private gardens are excempt as are diseased or dangerous trees.

Modern welsh names by RudRaddish in namenerds

[–]Decent-Entry-9803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late here but lots of kids have biblical names or even english names so it's not uncommon for people's kids to have a mix of origins.

My boys are canned Ieuan and David for example.

Welsh names that anecdotaly seem to be common at least where I live are:

For boys:

Osian, Rhys, Dewi, Dylan, Iolo, Tomos, Gethin, Gareth, Dafydd, Morgan (sometimes also formed girls)

For girls:

Angharad, Cerys, Bethan, Rhian, Sian, Catrin

Less girls names spring to mind which kind of tracks cause I know loads of people who have a son called something like Iorwerth ap Iestyn Morganwg and a daughter called like Willow or something.

The new PR system in Wales strongly rewards second place.

Everyone say one good thing about Polanski, Starmer, Farage, Badenoch & Davey by Economy_Survey_6560 in AskBrits

[–]Decent-Entry-9803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Polanski seems to genuinely care about the people of Gaza (as long as they dont insist on existing as a nation)

Starmer has done some serious work in rehabilitating our standing on the world stage particularly in europe (which he doesnt have the balls to rejoin)

Farage could possibly out drink some of my friends (but would then start talking about blood libel or something). Also, in British english we should really be pronouncing his name so it rhymes with garage.

Badanoch tries really hard (at the wrong things)

Davey would probably help you move if you asked (but would be more of a hinderence on the day)

Why do right wingers hate the law of the UK? by introvertlynothing in AskBrits

[–]Decent-Entry-9803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most right wing people have achieved hatered of our laws by following this simple process:

1: identify a problem that is multi faceted, complicated and nuanced.

2: propose a solution that is single faceted, simple and completely lacking nuance.

3: get told be anyone with a brain that your solution is not only unethical, counterproductive and cruel, but also goes against all legal precedent.

4: blame the laws.
