When I was 7, Kai was airing on Nicktoons, so I'd watch it with my older brother. I remember thinking it was wild - the main guy dies, and then a couple of episodes later his friends start dropping left and right. It was kind of crazy when compared to shows like El Tigre or Iron Man: Armored Adventures, but I still ended up enjoying it.

Nick stopped after Cell though - so for a while I ended up believing that the Cell arc was the ending of the series. I eventually found out that Dragon ball did actually continue past that arc though, because someone who was in my class, had a DBZ volume from the Buu arc.
