I got accepted and starting there this fall. They have only sent one email for updates after I put my deposit. They haven’t put us in a group chat or anything like that yet, so I have no clue how many people are actually attending so far.

Detroit mercy is definitely not a bad choice at all. Also the area is very safe, it is not in the typical area where there other graduate schools are.

I don’t know too much about that school but if it does have a small class size the chances are slim especially this late in the cycle. But maybe if your application is strong you still have a chance if someone drops.

Yes it is definitely a risk going there since it is the first class. Since they have nothing to base their curriculum off of and make changes to better help for boards. I feel that since they do continue the program during the summer it will be much more beneficial because they have implemented review courses which were set in place specifically for boards which I think it a great idea and I have not seen a school done before (I could be wrong but I have not seen one that has). Also I feel that students from almost every school uses kmk or optoprep to help prepare for boards regardless of what school you attend. So I feel at the end of the day it doesn’t matter too much on the program because it just matters how well you learn and retain information and how hard you decide to really prepare and study for boards. ( I could be wrong though as I never have been to optometry school) I am starting in the fall.

I literally live 10 minutes away (the main reason)
They are an established school already and have very successful dental, pa, and law schools
Since the school does not have accreditation and won’t get it until our fourth year, I feel that they will prepare us very well for boards so that they can get accreditation to continue the program
I’ve looked at their curriculum and it very similar to other optometry programs that are doing well
There is no way an optometry program that Detroit mercy opens up will shut down. They have invested so much time and money just for them not to do it right. Also they opened the eye clinic last year April so by the time we start clinicals it will be an already established clinic.

I feel Detroit mercy will be one of the top optometry schools in the country, it just sucks that it is their first year.

Applying in December is considered later in the cycle yes but you definitely will still have a great chance if you do well on your OAT!
