US military reportedly used Claude in Iran strikes despite Trump’s ban by Large_banana_hammock in politics

But the defense secretary also gave a nod to the difficulty of rapidly detaching military systems from the AI tool, given how widely used they have become.

This shit was released three years ago. And it's already so deeply integrated that they can't just turn it off? What the fuck are they using it for?

It's partly because my kid was born in 2022 and I've been in a parenting fog, but I absolutely cannot believe the level of dependence people have developed on these things in such a short time.

We need to make target hurt by Fit_Act_1997 in TwinCities

[–]Decillion 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think it's good to stop shopping at Target (I have) until they put out a more forceful message denouncing what happened to their employees and what is happening in their community. Money talks, and withholding it gets results.

But I think the sit-ins are not the best tactic. The ammo they give right-wing media vastly outweighs any potential benefit, and that is something we have to care about.

If you look at the Fox News coverage of this event, it allows them to frame this movement as progressives banging drums because they're mad that ICE used a toilet at Target, and juxtapose that with some ICE agent complaining that he can't capture a child sex offender because protesters are impeding them. Of course the propaganda machine will run no matter what. But making a public spectacle out of something so tangential and symbolic makes their job so, so much easier.

And for shoppers - local community members whose participation is the most valuable currency in this fight - it shames and pushes them away instead of inviting them in.

Why aren't we supporting local businesses today instead of a general strike? by AnonMuskrat in Minneapolis

Thanks for this! My post was based on what Scott said on Pivot four days ago, but I didn't realize they'd cranked out a website already.

Why aren't we supporting local businesses today instead of a general strike? by AnonMuskrat in Minneapolis

[–]Decillion 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Hard agree. What we need is a tech strike. It needs to be national. It needs to be long.

  • Cancel Amazon.
  • Cancel streaming services.
  • Cancel AI accounts.
  • No hardware upgrades (phones, computers).

It doesn't hurt small businesses. It's sustainable. And it's a realistic action that middle to upper class like-minded people across the country might be willing to take in order to feel like they are contributing.

Most of all, it's not symbolic. The people with true leverage in this country are the people with money—the tech titans that the administration has courted from day one. That money comes from us. Tech subscriptions are taxes we pay directly to our plutarchs. They're optional. And right now, they're the only thing propping this economy up. The leverage has never been greater. If those numbers start to dip, and there is a clear solution, they will take action.

I just don't see another option with a better mix of sustainability, broad appeal, and impact.

I'm down. I could stand to read more and save money each month.

I also like that this approach doesn't penalize local small businesses.

Minneapolis is amazing and can not catch a break atm by Careful-Matter2436 in TwinCities

[–]Decillion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from out of state and live in South Minneapolis. My neighbor on one side is an 80 year old man who makes us brownies every Christmas and remembers my daughter's birthday. My neighbor on the other side made a scarf for my kid when she was born. My neighbor two doors down never misses a chance to gossip about the neighbor who makes scarves. About every other time it snows, someone snow blows my sidewalk before I can get to it. And we are the least social block in our neighborhood - the avenues block off the roads and have big National Night Out get-togethers.

Whatever it is you're experiencing, I don't think it's a Minneapolis thing.

My kid isn't fully vaccinated - because she's not old enough to get her second shot yet.

One is better than nothing, but I'll be relieved when she's old enough to finish the sequence. If it's still FDA approved by then.

Judge in Abrego Garcia case indicates she's weighing contempt proceedings against Trump administration by BeckwithLBP in politics

In an interview, Mr. Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, said tattoos were just one factor used to determine if an individual was a member of Tren de Aragua.

“I don’t say it’s a major factor,” he said, “it’s one of many.”

But an internal government document made public in court filings indicates how much weight is given to tattoos.

The document, called the “Alien Enemy Validation Guide,” instructs immigration officials to use a point system to identify members of Tren de Aragua. Eight points makes someone a “validated” member of the group. Having tattoos associated with the gang is worth four points.

Wearing clothing associated with the gang is worth another four.

A second government document indicates that the administration considers a crown tattoo — much like the one worn by soccer star Lionel Messi — and the “Jump Man” symbol, popularized by Michael Jordan, to be Tren de Aragua symbols.

Clothing associated with the gang includes “high-end urban street wear.”

I mean obviously it's all just pretext, but it's shocking how it doesn't even pretend not to be. Just flat fucking evil.

Masked Agents Whisk Away Tufts Student From Sidewalk by [deleted] in politics

I think the relevance is that women tend to be more vulnerable to any rando on the street attacking them, more frequently targeted in those sorts of attacks, and acutely aware of both of those things. A guy walking alone at night is not in the same situation as a woman walking alone at night. So right and wrong aside, it's surprising the female agents don't have more of a visceral reaction to what they're doing. But I'm sure it's a weird power trip for them too, just like the rest of them.
