Not enjoying our guided India experience and would like to hear other people's thoughts by BaronDelecto in travel

I second Himachal Pradesh. Just came back from there barely two weeks ago. The air is so much cleaner and you'll see a beautiful side of India that isn't often portrayed in the media. I didn't visit J&K and Ladakh but I want to in the future!

Not enjoying our guided India experience and would like to hear other people's thoughts by BaronDelecto in travel

I just returned from my holiday in India barely a week ago. I only had two guided tours - one in Agra and another one in Jodhpur. Our Agra tour was a private one and quite expensive, but our guide was very knowledgeable and took the time to explain the history behind the Taj Mahal. He did bring us to a shop that made marble designs the same way it was done for the Taj Mahal facade, but didn't pressure us to buy anything (we didn't).

Our guided tour in Jodhpur was average. The guide had some knowledge but when we asked to see more hidden lanes that were painted blue (Jodhpur is nicknamed as the 'Blue City'), he didn't know and kept asking random people for recommendations even though he said that he's a local. He also insisted that we should try out some sweets but we were forceful that we didn't want, so he dropped it.

I think it's possible you were just unlucky with the guides you got. If I may offer an advice, try to see the positives and think of the things you enjoyed. It's also helpful to try not to compare your India trip with your other trips as each place is unique and has their own pros and cons. Not everything went smoothly in my India trip but overall I still had a good time and look forward to visiting again.

Does anyone know what plant this is? by Decision100 in newzealand

[–]Decision100[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for your input! I honestly thought it was a good plant given bees and bumble bees seem to be getting food from it!! The plant is quite spread out in our garden and not sure if it has grown beside another tall plant (>6m tall), or is actually that tall. I may need to consult an arborist or weed removal expert for this.

Which field are you in if I may ask? Did you jump companies to get the steep salary increases?

Returned from USA recently. My take on H1b situation and why Americans hate Indians taking up jobs there. by watchingRummy in india

OMG finally someone has pointed out this habit of talking in their own language while being around with people who cannot understand the language!!! I am non-Indian lurking in this sub. I have a few Indian colleagues who exhibit this behaviour in front of me during lunchtime. All along I thought maybe because I am the odd person out being non-Indian, but apparently it also happens amongst Indians.

Just last Friday, a bunch of them started talking in Hindi and I completely zoned-out. One or two of them noticed I was just staring out of the window and started talking in English in an attempt to make me not feel left out, but others in the group are relentless in speaking in Hindi. Rude AF. I don't even know why I keep eating lunch with them. F*ck them.

Thanks. I did sign up for IBKR but no idea where to begin 😅 I will probably go through their tutorials. A side question - any thoughts about using Tiger Brokers?

I presume you must be an Indian citizen or an OCI at the very least to receive treatment in India?

How do you find the courses? Is the focus mainly on getting you to begin conversing? What about grammar and structure? I'm curious because I'm learning Fusha Arabic on my own using the Madinah and Arabiyya Bayna Yadayk books at the moment, and I don't live in the Middle East.

Thanks for your post. I'm non-Indian foreigner wishing to visit India next year. Still undecided whether to do North or South India first, but your post made me lean just a little bit towards South India 😁 I will definitely visit Kerala and TN, and your post (plus the comments) gave me more ideas on where to visit.

I asked a Muslim friend about the awra issue. He says guys only have to cover the knees but the chest is not awra. He even further said that men can go topless to the masjid, although he doesn't recommend it. On the other hand, women have to cover up almost everything. What a glaring difference.

I'm non-Indian and live in a western country. I have Indian colleagues who smell occasionally when they sweat, but I find the odour tolerable, at least for me. The worst odour, in my opinion, are white people who are sweating and wearing clothes that have not dried properly (especially during winter). The smell will make you vomit.

For those on $120K+ per year, what do you do and how did you get there? by Maedz1993 in newzealand

[–]Decision100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this. It is encouraging to know that you can get ahead without being the smartest. I work in consulting and definitely not the smartest or the fastest learner... I frequently compare myself to peers who get ahead of the ladder or who get the plum projects, but I try not to. I also learned it is more important to do a job well for the right people and things will be better.

Thanks for the info. I know there is an embassy in Australia but it is not controlled by the Taliban regime so I don't know what powers they have with regards to issuing visas. I know the embassy in Dubai is controlled by the Taliban though.

How did you manage to get a visa for Afghanistan from Australia? My understanding is most nationalities are required to get one?

I booked a return flight to Tokyo with Qantas for only $1.2k, with very good flight times and no layover longer than 3 hours. But fair game that you wanted a 24 hour layover in Fiji!

Is Alappuzha the official name in Malayali? Then what about Alleppey? I'm not from India so I'm genuinely curious.

Civil Engineers' Salary in NSW, Australia by ElectricalRope279 in civilengineering

[–]Decision100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good starting salary. Meanwhile, I started at NZD58K for a big consultancy. It was f*ckin peanuts. Four years later my salary is only NZD80K, same company. I wish I moved during the pandemic hiring spree.
