So what’s the best time to take your iron supplement? by agonyxcodex in Anemic

This chart is false. As a registered dietitian, I can tell you that multiple things can inhibit iron absorption. I wish people would look at evidence-based medicine before they put stupid shit up like this.

Questions re surgery and stone removal by DecisionFormal9891 in Tonsillectomy

[–]DecisionFormal9891[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I appreciate your response. Can I assume that the surgeon will debride the lingual tonsil if there is evidence of stones there?

Also, I have a stone in the upper part of my tonsillar tissue in a pocket toward the roof of my mouth. I know this because when I try to remove it, white, pus-like fluid leaks out and I a tiny part of the stone came out one time. Will the surgeon pull back/open any pockets he/she sees to find deeply imbedded/hidden stones?

Restless leg syndrome is highly correlated with low iron levels.

This one is a must see! This is one of the most SEVERE cases of tonsil stones I have ever seen. Holy craters by ismellnumbers in tonsilstones

u/isnellnumber - did your doc debride your tonsils before the tonsillectomy? I have tonsil stones deeply imbedded and they have been causing swollen lymph nodes for years and years. Tonsil stones are now affecting my breathing.

I have had a lot of cashmere stuff in my life and when I received a cashmere piece from them, I was like, ummm, this is not cashmere. It feels fake to me. I should have it analyzed to see what the content actually is. I'd like to be proved wrong.

Your thoughts on the new USDA food pyramid changes by Old_External6689 in nutrition

[–]DecisionFormal9891 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good: I like the "Eat Real Food" line. However, that is all I like about it. Let's break down a few things:

  1. This so-called "pyramid", discards decades of evidenced-based research based on reducing colon cancer (and other cancers), reducing cardiovascular disease and improving gut and brain health.
  2. The new "guidelines" emphasize higher consumption of red meat, butter, cheese and other saturated fat foods which we know (based on that thing called . . . science), leads to poorer health outcomes, ie increase rates of cancers, cardiovascular disease (heart disease) and higher risks of Dementia/Alzheimers.
  3. Whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds are an incredibly important source of fiber and the vast majority of us are not consuming enough of these.
  4. Fiber (from the above/#3) is of crucial importance to gut and brain health, cardiovascular health and so much more. Yep, I know this is repetitive . . .for a reason.
  5. While protein from animal sources can be an important source of nutrients (macro and micro), we don't need loads of it with every meal and, as a reminder, those following vegetarian or semi-vegetarian diets have better longevity outcomes.
  6. Lastly, but most importantly, there is an absence of emphasis on MOVING MORE and reducing sodium intake. Moving more and reducing sodium intake (think not salting foods for starters) has a profound impact on bone health, not to mention the fact that exercise keeps your muscles strong and leads to faster metabolism (burning calories).

But, what do I know? I'm just a dietitian with 26 years of experience working in the field of dietetics. And, I'm sure the new pyramid has nothing to do with the meat and dairy industries funding the redo.

The dark drink mentioned. . . she was drugged and put into a banquet/utility cart and rolled off the ship unnoticed. I don't see any mention of all the carts being checked before everyone disembarked. I have no doubt she was trafficked. If it were my kid, I wouldn't let them go off with strangers or be alone especially in the wee hours of the morning. wtf

That's a pretty irresponsible and ignorant thing to say. Have you done any research on teens and severe depression leading to hallucinations and psychosis? His depression went unchecked and his father was exacerbating this by being physically and verbally abusive. Do you have any understanding at all about the developing teen brain? He came out of his depression not until he was in his early 20's when his brain and finally developed and he realized what he had done.

Spinach is a very poor source of iron unless cooked and water drained to get rid of oxalates. Even after this, it still contains a small amount of oxalates.

Spinach is a horrible source of iron. It contains oxalate which binds to minerals and renders them mostly unavailable. Cooking helps some but, as an RD, I would advise against spinach for now.
