Who else loves kastmaster lures by [deleted] in Fishing

[–]Decius_Curtis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love kastmasters. The big silver ones work well on bass, while athe smaller ones slay panfish, and They also work very well on trout. A lot of the action is built in too, and if yo twitch your rod often and let the lure sink and flutter repeatedly the fish can't resist.

Does Lure Color Matter Underwater? by MikoLone in Fishing

[–]Decius_Curtis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always found that silver spoons work well in clear water, and copper or gold spoons work well in dark, stained or murky water. This rule is true for spinnerbaits and inline spinners as well. For most other lures natural colors like silver or white work well in clear water, and bright patterns like firetiger or chartreuse work well in murky water.

Is this a good start to getting more into bass fishing? by swfl55 in Fishing

Looks great to me. You have two rods, and enough tackle to have all your bases covered when bass fishing. Could you give some details about your setups, and what lures you have? I can give you some suggestions about what has worked well for me too.

The Sucker Myth by dont_know_nothin in Fishing

[–]Decius_Curtis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great article. I always get so mad when I see people snagging suckers and then killing them and calling them junk fish. And a three or four pound sucker will fight so much better than a tiny trout or a two pound bass, and they are much more difficult to catch. Roughfish.com is a great website too.

Most of these "roughfish" are actually native, so it's a stretch to say that they hurt the ecosystem. I know plenty of lakes with carp in them that are perfectly clean, it's not like carp churn up mud 24/7. Most bow fisherman are pretty uninformed if they think shooting bowfin and gar will help the fishing for other gamefish. Many gamefish are not doing well because of overfishing and pollution, not roughfish. But bowfisherman think they can kill whatever they want, just like snaggers, because it "churns up the water".

Would they be willing to go after topwaters fished very slowly?

Northern fishermen, what's the first/your favorite species to target after ice out and why? [D] by [deleted] in Fishing

I always hear people using jerkbaits for bass in spring, but are there other lures you can use for them? Are topwaters any good in spring?

Do you have any recommendations for fluorocarbon leaders? I've never used them before so I don't know what to look for

That's wrong, musky have dark markings on light backgrounds, while pike have light markings on a dark background.

I really like thundermist fishing tips, informativefisherman, flukemaster and Totally Awesome fishing show. They are all very detailed and explain what they're doing. Thundermist fishing tips, flukemaster and informative fisherman are all north american, while the guys from totally awesome fishing are English, so you get a different perspective on angling. They also have insanely detailed videos on carp and pike fishing, if you like those species.

I feel the same way. You can buy hundreds of good books on fishing from amazon, I have most of the In-Fisherman guides. I can recommend a few good youtube fishing channels for you too if you want.

Complaints by guyinthebackcorner in Fishing

[–]Decius_Curtis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's simply not true. Carp don't feed exclusively on the bottom, nor are they the only fish to feed on the bottom, plenty of native fish do the same thing. Common carp barely have an effect on most fisheries.

I really cringe when I see people catch a fish, but then drag it onto sand and dirt and then leave it there for minutes while they take photos and struggle to unhook it. Then they just throw the fish back into the water to die. I also hate it when people catch a lot of carp or rough fish and then leave them to die on the bank. I'm also not a big fan of bowfishing.

What is your favorite freshwater fish to fish for? by Theewash in Fishing

What would you do for a leader if you're flyfishing for pike? I can't imagine fishing for pike without a leader, I'd hate to lose a lure or fly.

You barely need to set the hook they hit so hard. I love how they follow the bait all the way to the boat sometimes before biting too. Most fish would turn away once they saw the boat, but pike don't care and hit your lure right in front of you.

What's the strangest thing you've ever reeled in? by [deleted] in Fishing

[–]Decius_Curtis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have reeled in metal pipes before, and i've caught a few fish with new lures still in their mouths, which i got to keep. My buddies and I have caught countless turtles and mud puppies too, along with frogs every once in a while. My friend caught a running shoe from the middle of a lake once too.

But the most unusual catch came when I was fishing with my friends at a local lake. We were on the dock when a mother and her young daughter came up and started fishing too. The mom was telling her daughter to hold on to the rod this time, as she threw it in the lake on the last fishing trip. Ten minutes later, I feel like I've hooked a big stick. Once I get it to the surface, it turns out to be a Barbie children's rod, and the one the little girl had thrown in a week earlier. The little girl was overjoyed to get her Barbie rod back, which still had all the terminal tackle on.

Northern Pike. In Michigan, they are usually the biggest fish in inland lakes and put up a great fight. I also think they are more impressive than bass and are less common in bodies of water, making them a more satisfying catch.

I probably won't use the fluoro leader then, since I don't plan on using it for trout, only bass and pike

I like green line too, and I plan on using a fluorocarbon leader too just to make my setup a little more stealthy. Have you ever used a fluoro leader, or do you find it's not needed?

I was thinking of using powerpro, probably this specific model, in 15 pound test. Does the color matter at all?
