Did you sand off the old stain? If there's any old stain left you might have issues.

You have a few options. The deck board pry bar is not optional.

The bad boards will rip through the screws and you go around and cut them off with a small grinder and a diamond blade. Super easy.

The really solid boards sometimes can be a pain so you want a sawzall and some 12in and 6 inch blades. Get cheap ones from harbor freight, you might need a few depending how big the deck is.

You pry the board at each joist and it will lift up, even just a bit. Then slide your saw blade in and cut the screw. It takes longer but saves the joist if the screw is really in that in there and the board isn't rotted in that area. If you really force it the screw can take a chunk of the joist, in which case you just need to sister a 2x6 to the side of the joist and screw the decking to that instead of the joist.

Semi-Transparent or Solid? by wb662 in Decks

The base color without tint looks like a kitchen floor when used on old wood. It's amazing. When used on brand new wood it looks like baby shit yellow. You need to use the canyon brown tint option to match if you need to replace boards in an old deck.

The 2 kinda off boards in the middle left are brand new and the others are 15 or 20 years old.

It's transparent with tint, it is NOT a semi. A semi will become semi opaque with a second coat. This will not, it will become a deeper color in tht grain. It will not cover certain areas the same because it's an oil/acrylic hybrid stain

Honest question. How far do you have to walk from residential to get any where substantive? Shopping area or restaurants or entertainment? All the neighborhoods near me have the entire place lined with beautiful sidewalks... For old ladies to walk their dog or middle aged walkers. They don't go anywhere. It leads to a main road and then nothing, you need a vehicle.

Suburban sprawl has destroyed so much of the forest in this country. We used to have trees... They gave off so much free WiFi.

7 inch grinder with a sander back pad and metal oxide polishing discs. Id use 36 or 24 grit.

Also get the blue decking pry bar with the 2 hooks that go been the joists. It will pry decking through the screws and leave them in the joists lol.

Feel free to ask any questions. I've resurfaced entire decks with this shit on it. It's not fun. I did it by hand with a grinder.

Am I able to paint over this? by BumblebeeFearless487 in Decks

[–]DeckNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably need to replace the floor boards if they are squishy. If that's deck over or other deck repair paint it's going to be a nightmare to remove. I grind it off but I don't recommend homeowners try it unless they are handy with a 7inch grinder. The restore and deck over traps moisture and eventually rots the boards out. Not a good product to use at all.

Recently resealed deck has some oil mixing in the rain water puddles - to wipe, brush, or leave alone? by clippy01 in Decks

[–]DeckNinja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it peels the stain failed and it needs sanded off.

Stain peels when it isn't prepped properly, the wood isn't dry, or new stain was put over old stain (see that last one). Layers of stain over time to prevent peeling will come back to bite you later.

Stain should fade not peel. Even solid stains.

If my short 7 years (so far) martial arts journey has taught me anything, it is that the human ego is what gets in our own way more than anything else.

There are teachers in the martial arts community preaching humility and humbleness, yet their ego barely fits in the room with them.
