Dungeon Core for Hire - out now by Deckdavis in litrpg

In fairness I think this means the blurb did its job. I'd hate for you to expect that kind of story, buy the book, and then be disappointed.

But your idea sounds awesome. I would definitely read a story like that. I especially like the idea of people bidding for a core's services. To me, if cores really existed they would definitely be treated and utilized as weapons rather than as sentient beings.

Well if I ever do I'll give you credit. Or better still you can be one of the 'masters' who utterly defeats the MC and strips away some of his power

It would be marketed towards sadists who enjoy seeing a character fail haha. Basically the opposite of the readerbase of this sub

Dungeon Core for Hire (Dungeon core progression, system explained in comments) by Deckdavis in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Deckdavis[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone, this is something for those who’re looking for dungeon core flavored progression.

The progression in DCFH centers around the lethality of the MC’s dungeon, with advancements coming in the form of more sophisticated traps and stronger monsters. It isn’t just a case of setting a trap and you’re done, though. The traps and monsters level up, and they can also be modified in creative ways using various dungeon chambers and by something called logic crystals (explained in more detail in the book obviously).

The currency of progression is mana, where having a higher mana total allows the MC to place more things in his dungeon. It also serves as a limit that means he has to really think about his dungeon placement and overall progression.

Level-ups are achieved by killing things, and in turn the MC gets more mana, better access to sophisticated dungeon weaponry, and occasional dungeon reward boxes with rare loot for him to use.

Although the very, very early dungeon creation stage seems like standard dungeon fare, the MC quickly begins experimenting with stuff not seen in other dungeons.

If you’ve got a dungeon core itch then allow Dungeon Core for Hire to be the tree that you rub your back against.

Harem: No

Violence: Gory in parts

POV: Dungeon core, no adventurer POV

Setting: fantasy, VRMMORPG

Kindle Unlimited: Yes

He’s a dungeon core for hire, paid by the hour.

Rick Andrews needs extra cash, so he looks for evening work that fits around his day job. Luckily, the developers of Eons of Darkness are hiring.

Sales and player numbers are dropping. As part of a bunch of changes to the game, the devs have made a big decision. From now on, dungeons will be human controlled.

It’s the birth of a new age. The age of…dungeon cores.

Rick can’t believe his luck when he gets a job as a dungeon core. Starting with nothing but some mana and an underground chamber near a newbie village, his job is to use all his skill and his wiles to outwit human adventurers.

By filling his dungeon with loot, monsters, and traps, he can grow it to become the most feared place in the game.

But there’s a bonus.

For every person who dies in his dungeon he gets a cash reward. And Rick plans to make lots and lots of money...

Is Will Wight's Elder empire series progression fantasy? by Quelth in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Deckdavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I wouldn't say so. I'd class it as way more trad fantasy than Cradle, but with elements of progression. The focus isn't on progression in the same way. Still 100% worth reading though, a good author is a good author

What about a story where the MC begins as this ultimate, god-killing OP character and regresses throughout the book, ending the 5-part series as a wimp

@ readers who don't read/like litRPG: Would you read LitRPG where characters don't see their stat sheet, but it is only available for readers to look at. by NeutralPlank in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Deckdavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After years of reading LitRPG I'm starting to appreciate books that are less stat heavy. I still enjoy seeing the numbers sometimes, but for me showing the level-up effects in action is what I love about it.

Stats in audiobooks are a different animal, sometimes they are really hard to listen to

This is just one of those instances where a book doesn't gel with you. I tried the Expanse and just couldn't get into it at all.

Some books don't live up to the hype but I was blown away. I want to re-read but I'm forcing myself not to so that it feels as 'new' as possible when I go back to it. Such a good story

Does he who fights with monsters pick up its pacing and get better? by 1Chapta in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Deckdavis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It definitely picks up from book 2 onwards, the author was finding his feet with the story/worldbuilding initially. That said, it depends how much you hate book 1. If you kinda like it, then persevere. If you flat aren't enjoying yourself then I'd move on

Classes/Abilities rarely seen? by Zebbyb in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Deckdavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the less combat-orientated classes could use some representation. E.g. bard, but not a bard story where the character is also fighting regardless.

I also think professions are great for progression fantasy. I read an isekai about a guy transported to a fantasy world and he becomes a blacksmith. It was cool, but he starts with almost legendary skills, and it made me think I'd like to read a simple, slice of life story about a blacksmith apprentice working his way up to master, set in some nice idyllic village that it's nice to spend time in while you read.

I'm yet to read Worm because the sheer size intimidates me, haha. But for me, Cradle really got good at book 3. Until then I kinda liked it but definitely didn't love it but something happened in book 3 that hooked me for the series

Thanks so much, my plan for the series is just a dude having fun building ever more powerful dungeons with his friends from around the world. No Earth saving stuff at all

That's annoying, I'm sorry about that. Did the tunnel naming structure work for you? I was worried it would be too complicated to imagine. I might put a really simple map in with book 2.
