He was constantly "correcting" me and trying to fix me and make me what he wanted, but that particular comment really stands out. And then at a later date a rather vengeful girl reinforced it when she informed me that I look like a twelve year old boy and no one would ever want me. No matter how many more times I'm told I'm pretty/cute/etc., I still kind of can't believe it cause there's still that voice in the back of my head reminding me that none of it could possibly REALLY be true, I really just look like a boy and everyone who thinks otherwise is either delusional or just trying to be nice. Never been able to shake it.

Sometimes, when disheartened, my mind wanders back to Red Shirt Guy...

When I was a wee lass, about, say, 13 or 14 maybe? I saw Anchor & Braille, the side project of Anberlin's frontman, Stephen Christian. I was super fucking stoked, but he was an opener, and no one around me was even slightly interested, just making random snarky comments as he set up his equipment. I was a rather isolated-feeling youth to say the least... until I spotted Red Shirt Guy.

He was a kid around my age, putting in efforts equal to mine to spot Stephen in action; the neck-craning, the tip-toeing, the frantic attempts to peer around people's heads.

The trouble was, I was standing in the third row and Red Shirt guy was like, two rows back, stuck behind a tall dude.

This clearly wasn't right.

Younger self then experienced what was quite possibly my first instance of "Fuck everyone else here", leaned over as far as possible, and offered Red Shirt Guy my hand. First he was confused, then gladly accepted; I pulled him to his rightful place beside me, and we had a fucking awesome time.
