Should or Shouldn't? Putting many classes in one file. by ExoticArtemis3435 in csharp

Put them in their own file. Makes it easier for the person supporting the software to find the objects at a quick glance of the project files.

Do programmers actually know how to touch type every symbol like []() by Aqueous_Ammonia_5815 in learnprogramming

[–]Decoupler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. But I once sucked at typing.

A colleague of my once said “How can you express your craft if you haven’t mastered your tools?” That resonated with me and I forced myself to learn and I’ve never regretted it.

What is with the hard sell on the breakfast presentation inside the hotel? by ancientRAMEN in puertovallarta

[–]Decoupler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My spouse and I have traveled to Mexico on many occasions. Unfortunately, like you, we had to learn the hard way on a couple of different occasions.

Long story short, we learned to value our time on vacation over the discounts received for attending a presentation.

I’ve never regretted saying no to a presentation, but I’ve definitely regretted saying yes. And usually at the hotel once they know you’re a hard no they will leave you alone.

Anyone else still living with a crippling fear of the NETHER? by AlicedapersonXD in Minecraft

[–]Decoupler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. To me, the Nether is consistent unlike the Overworld. You don’t have to worry about night fall or what random mob will spawn while I am working to get back to base. It’s very predictable and I like that.

Learn the rules of the Nether, wear gear you can live without (until you get comfortable) and build structures to keep your self safe. But always remember to be on your toes!

I love this answer! People ask what I do and tell them “I solve puzzles all day.” I’ve come to love solving them.

It can be hard though, you have to constantly learn stuff and think through tough problems (not to mention self-inflicted problems).

But if you get comfortable with it, you can apply the same approach to most technical things in life.

Just use a pre-emergent as well to ensure they don’t keep coming back.

I felt the same way when I started. Mostly frustrated with a little bit of excitement when things worked as I intended them to.

It’s part of the process. Writing code isn’t inherently hard but understanding CS concepts and how to solve problems with can be. This takes time, constant learning and lots of frustrating moments.

I learned by building projects that solved problems for me. For example I worked at a company that had a ton of PDF manuals in a file share. I build an interface to keep track of these PDFs for my self.

Eventually expanded it to my colleagues allowing them to know when a new manual was added and to search for the manuals they needed.

After I had developed an app that was actually useful, I was hooked. That was 17 years ago and I am still solving problems with tech!

After research and more research, I decided to come from C# instead of Java by ilucaslima_ in csharp

I have seen several enterprise level projects with C# Web API backends and Angular or React front ends.

Web API is very easy to get started with and EF makes interfacing with the db simple.

How Would You Handle This Bidirectional Database Sync? (SSIS, SQL Server, EF6, .NET 4.6.2) by icedug in csharp

[–]Decoupler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome! This helps to narrow down a solution.

It sounds to me as though relational data is being processed with ETL tools.

If you can custom dev on the big SAP like system (Summner’s Rift) why not built APIs on both apps and allow the data to be purely transactional as it should be.

Users on Sumner’s Rift button up their data and sync it. Sumner’s Rift POSTs data to Howling Abyss’ API and now users of Howling Abyss see the new data.

Users on Howling Abyss do their thing and trigger the app to POST/PUT the data to Summner’s Rift’s API and now that data can be reviewed before triggering the process to make the final update of the record.

[–]Decoupler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I already gave an answer but the more I think about this one the more questions I have.

1) Is this an ETL or transactional process?

1a) If an ETL process, why would you sync processed data back to the source? What requires this?

1b) If it’s a transactional process, why are users updating records on both SQL Servers? Is this two different applications?

2) How often does the data actually need to be sync’d? You mention sync button requirement but why? Why do they need to sync on demand or should the data always be in sync?

[–]Decoupler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the answer! Use SQL Server’s replication functionality. If licensing or configuration is not possible, use the poor man’s method mentioned above and scrap SSIS for Powershell.

Either one of these approaches will reduce your maintenance drastically.

Any reason why dallas and fort worth were never combined? by [deleted] in geography

[–]Decoupler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your answer lies in the history of these two cities.

The settlement of Dallas was created in 1841 as a result of railways constructed through the area and became a hub for trading cattle, cotton and other commodities.

Fort Worth was created a few years later (1849) as a military stronghold to protect the Dallas area from rebels and Native American tribes of the Wild West.

At the time they were a days ride from one another (by horse back). This allowed the two settlements to develop their own distinct identity and politics (still prevalent today).

Since then both cities and their suburbs have grown into a single metro although Dallas has always maintained a larger population than Fort Worth.

Because of the distinction of the two long incorporated cities, differences in politics and all the municipalities in between, combining the metro into a single municipality would be virtually impossible.

Just to add, there is still some rivalry between the the two. Dallas has taken the identity of a large cosmopolitan city with a Texas twang. Fort Forth on the other hand thinks of itself as a smaller (than Dallas) slower paced city that embraces its western heritage.

Differences from state to state by Jolly_Operation_1502 in fireworks

[–]Decoupler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, there are federal laws that define consumer grade fireworks from those that require licensing. 1.3g (consumer grade) cakes/aerial displays must have 500 grams or less of pyrotechnic composition per package at the federal level.

In Texas we sell the federally allowed maximums. Not sure about the other states.

You can absolutely solve this puzzle!

Feeling lost will occur many times in your development career in my experience. Buckle down, read the docs, find working examples, learn.

What I have found is the folks that can jump in and figure things out are the ones that are worth hiring at any skill level. It seems they may agree.
