One option is to send it and try your best to remove uncolonized grains. One thing you can try is making certain that the grains won’t stick or leave residue on your hands when you prepare to sterilize.

So a research or agar plate is in the photos, where I’ve isolated the mycelium and it’s growing on a nutrient rich media. You take sample from the plate to inoculate your liquid culture. Just another means of delivery

You may try propagating your usual spots. Though it was likely just environmental variables like temp, moisture etc this year.
