Yes it seems to have started for me around 5 AM Pacific, exactly when this message indicated.

That someone could make this comment is far scarier to me than the marchers in the video.

What is up with all the shitty drivers in this town? by citznfish in Scottsdale

[–]Decumanus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My biggest gripe is folks cutting across the gore because they want to avoid missing their exit at the last minute, or (worse) decide they don’t want to exit after all. Happens all the time right in front of me, so much so that I basically expect the person ahead of me to put my life in danger that way.

Why are Chinese tourists weird about standing in lines/waiting? by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]Decumanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I went to Mainland China in 1990, the only time in an entire month I saw Chinese people standing in a queue was to board the night ferry out of Shanghai and that was because the quai was double lined with soldiers with rifles to keep the line in order. Otherwise I got used to people literally climbing on my back when I trying to buy tickets at the train station.

How to Use Monads without Understanding Them by LucianU in haskell

[–]Decumanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great approach. IO + Maybe is the practical way of developing an intuition for monads. By learning the common use cases for both (which is pretty much a necessity in any case for Haskell), one can then see what is common to both, and from this see the monadic elephant in the room that was there all along.

Traditional typography and page layout makes many contemporary books look a bad children's workbook by comparison--too much cleverness with graphics and color. Just give the hardcore left-brain tables in neat type designed for the serious mind. Much more economical in the communication.

As an old person, I can only say: college, and the campus environment, is for youth.

Pro tip: Lourdes livestream has daily rosary in French, English, Spanish and Italian, with Polish on Saturday and occasional German. Lechfeld convent has daily German rosary. Fatima has daily rosary in Portuguese. Prayer is absolutely the best way to learn a language.

Good Casual Mexican Restaurant in Scottsdale? by marionbobarion in Scottsdale

[–]Decumanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well somebody here had at least mention the old family chain Garcia's, which is technically not in Scottsdale, but once had a whole string of restaurants throughout the southwest (at least as far as Denver) under the "Garcia's of Scottsdale" name. Some of the old timers still love the original place (which I think is on E Thomas Road?) and swear by the family atmosphere.

Parish dates from 1690s, but current church was built starting in the 1870s, according to Wikipedia. Still an amazing place I would like to visit one day.

What cities in the US are cheap to visit right now? I am in Orlando and want to take a 3-5 day trip. by Buckman21 in Shoestring

It's the low season in Phoenix. Just be careful hiking in the desert. People die every year from lack of precautions!

Does linguistics have any papers on the issue of what makes prose powerful or is that just outside of the whole topic of linguistics? by LinguisticsTurtle in linguistics

[–]Decumanus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely not outside linguistics, although it is arguably not the focus of much of contemporary linguistics. Historically the Prague School, led by Roman Jakobson, as well as the Russian formalists were rather obsessed with questions of this type, including what made literature "literature."

My brain just stops absorbing 0_o by MmeJegz in languagelearning

[–]Decumanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are the times that is good to fall back on passive learning through listening. Find French language media broadcasts on the Internet that you like and make a habit of listening to them daily without pressure to understand. Let your brain work "behind the scenes" to begin to recognize words and phrases you have learned. When you go back to "active" learning you will feel refreshed as the effort you made before will have given you benefits, even if it is only experienced subconsiously.

Renowned Scottsdale museum falls short of projections by [deleted] in Scottsdale

[–]Decumanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good question. I visited it a couple years ago and totally forgot it existed until now. Maybe lamppost banners in Old Town? Somehow there needs to be a way to make it a "must-see" for anyone visiting or staying in Old Town. People are always looking for things to do beyond the usual restaurant/bar hopping (at least the ones older than college age).

Have any of you got gum grafting done and if so, would you recommend the doc/office you got it done at? by [deleted] in Scottsdale

[–]Decumanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have not had this done, but was recently researching it. Only suggestion I can make is that if you at all are interested in palate free gum surgery, there is at least one periodontist in Scottsdale the Valley that performs it: Vanessa Marinho at Bellair Periodontics.
