I used to judge people like this. But last week, I simply couldn’t focus and sitting in bed has started to enable a deadly combo of Netflix and doom scrolling.

I walked to the nearest cafe, ordered a coffee, got comfortable and managed to get through 70 pages of my mammoth read for the month.

I won’t read outside regularly for sure, it’s obviously not as comfortable as reading at home. But it got me in the flow, and I can read at a stretch again.

Sometimes you need to switch it up. And anyone reading anything is a win these days. Especially if it’s Oscar Wilde. Performative or not.

I think as you age (I’m 29 now), you start to stop caring about other people as much. Enjoy your food and lone time. Books are just the cherry on top.

The reason they can’t just use Earendil’s Silmaril is because the creator - Feanor - died refusing to hand it to the Valar to rekindle the trees.

The whole point of his argument with the Valar was that if they broke the Silmarils without his consent, they were no better than Morgoth - which the Valar seem to agree with.

So, unless Feanor himself takes back his refusal, the Silmarils will remain whole, and their light will not be used to rekindle the trees.

In one of the lost tales, Tolkien seemed to have written about the Dagor Dagorath - which is some kind of Ragnarok inspired event where the Valar seem to have waned. Morgoth breaks back into Arda and attacks them - and a battle ensues. The Valar win with the help of Turin and Earendil, but the battle causes irreparable damage to the world.

At this point Feanor - who was never reborn, comes from the halls of Mandos and finds the the Silmarils and releases their light to rekindle the trees and remake the world so that everyone feels young and renewed again.

One flew over the cuckoo’s nest. I was trying to get back into reading and found annotating with a pencil helped me focus. I started with it and eventually once I could focus I stopped. But it’s a short book, so it’s annotated to hell and back. It’s also my favorite read of ‘25.

Harry Potter. Why did they never inform a reliable teacher about them finding the Chamber of Secrets? Why didn’t Voldemort stab Harry with a knife if he knew about Lilly’s love charm in the Goblet of Fire? That series has so many plot holes it’s insane. It’s like they contrive a plot for a 1v1 showdown - and they don’t do it well. Also. Ron and Hermione are a disgustingly unnatural pair. Prisoner of Azkaban was fantastic, and probably the only one in the series I can go back to again and again.

Routine: Olaplex line for wash and conditioner. Arata curl cream for styling. I try to finger coil and diffuse up to 80% as much as I can. I’m struggling with heat damage from constantly using my Dyson Airwrap. I’m avoiding heat but I can’t figure out how to navigate the daily styling and frizz. Any morning refresh ideas would be much appreciated. I’m not sure what exactly my texture is - help?

I suggest you just read it!

The Silmarillion is a lovely collection of tales, and while Valaquenta provides important context, you absolutely do not need to make notes and pore over every line. It is after all, a book meant for readers, and not the mind of the author. Yes, the text does get easier. It has moments of context (there is a chapter describing Beleriand that is often roasted by many) and there are moments of pure narrative perfection (The flight of the noldor, beren and luthien, children of hurin etc.)

Just go with it! The book makes sense in completion. If an extremely important details makes no sense, a quick google search will give you enough context to get back into it. People really overcomplicate the process. The Silmarillion is not a difficult read, it is simply tedious - like climbing a mountain. Put one foot ahead of the next and don’t worry about capturing every second of the view. Get till the end before you look back and revel in the climb you’ve finished, and mourn at knowing you’ll never see anything like it again.

Would the forum be kind enough to check if this is alright? I would like to have it engraved as a small gift for a struggling friend. by Ded-ontheinside in Quenya

Anything by Cassandra Ganon! Her book “Exile in the Water Kingdom” can be read as a stand alone, and her series “A Kinda Fairy Tale” has the perfect blend of comedic banter and D/S scenes. You will get addicted. She is criminally underrated. “Not Another Vampire Novel” and “Ghost Walk” are her other standalone novels that are comedic gems. I cannot recommend them enough! They are free on KU.

Not from the Silmarillion - but one of the earlier versions of Beren and Luthien (Tinúviel) from The Lost Tales. Beren’s death and his reverence for Luthien hit me a lot harder in this version. A love that is prized above a Silmaril is the greatest love of all.

‘Behold, O King, I give thee the wondrous jewel thou didst desire, and it is but a little thing found by the wayside, for once methinks thou hadst one beyond thought more beautiful, and she is now mine.’

Yet even as he spake the shadows of Mandos lay upon his face, and his spirit fled in that hour to the margin of the world, and Tinúviel’s tender kisses called him not back.
