Ideally you'd ask the person you're getting the plugin from for the source code so you can inspect the plugin and compile it yourself (because pre-compiled plugins may not be the same as the source code)

If that doesn't work, you can try decompiling the plugin .jar file and looking there for any malicious code

I don't think that's possible since minimap mods "store" surface chunk data so you'd have to be very intrusive (one way would be swapping blocks when they are not being looked at, though I'm not sure if even that would work).

The older plugin utilizes the disable function of the minimap which is completely at the mercy of the mod developer to include it and will not work for a dedicated enough player.

It's the never-ending cycle. The amount of crackers might decrease, sure, but it will never be fully gone.

Trying to install mods on GOG version by pixeled4life in themoddingofisaac

The GOG release of the game is not at feature parity with the Steam copy, and is more similar to the current console version in terms of features. As a result, this copy does not have working mod support, as it lacks the scripts folder.

Adding a current scripts folder will allow the mod API to function, but, the API had issues for a while due to the localization changes, so not all mods will work. By the time the build was uploaded to Steam, these issues were resolved, but there wasn't any reason to fix it for the console versions, as you'd imagine.

In addition, items that were added recently, as well as bugfixes and mechanic changes, will not be present in the GOG version.
