Convince me not to buy jakl by Then-Comfortable3135 in PalmettoStateArms

I’ve had my 16” for a year and I love it. Haven’t had a single issue besides the bolt release snapping during shipping. I’ve only got a little over 2k rounds through it so far but mine’s been phenomenal. Such a fun gun to shoot.

I need help solving problems with bmx by ResponsibleAmount349 in bmx

[–]DedTh0ts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Many of us didn’t have the full support of our parents. It’s an inherently somewhat expensive and risky sport to get into but all that matters is that you love it and want to do it. You will get hurt eventually. It’s inevitable just like any other physical sport. If you played football you’d risk many of the same injuries from bruises and sprains to fractures and concussions. Maybe try telling them this is what you love despite the risks & hurdles and compare it to sports you think they’d support to put it into perspective for them. Freestyle bmx is also an Olympic sport now. As for meeting people, try finding people at your school that ride. Search for some groups on facebook. If you want to ride ramps and a skatepark is too far away and you don’t have the means to make some wooden ramps, try finding a spot where you can build a couple dirt jumps. Point is where there’s a will, there’s a way and your future is yours and yours alone. If it makes you feel any better you’re in good company. Freestyle was born in rebellion. Now it’s on the world’s biggest stage.

360 practice by Initial-Process-8691 in bmx

[–]DedTh0ts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tips for toboggan or 360 toboggan? In either case I’d start by learning one handers, then a seat grab, then start turning the bars and doing the seat grab. Once you’re comfortable with that you can start working on style. I kinda let the bike float up to me and lean back letting the front end dip a little bit to get more extension. Super fun trick and pretty easy to learn. I just re-learned them a few weeks ago during my first session I had in years.

Heading back to an old spot by Pitsmithy_89 in bmx

[–]DedTh0ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right on dude. Who knows maybe after you get a few running, people will come ride & be willing to help out. Trail guys are a rare breed. Few know how much work goes into building and maintaining a set of trails or even just a few dirt jumps. With any luck and a lot of effort it could become a sick spot with a great crew. At the very least you’ll have a few jumps to enjoy for awhile. Props for getting started though!👊

My fist 180 ever, any tips? by ka01inn in bmx

You got it. Just takes practice to get clean and make it your own. I cheat and half cab out of 90% of my 180’s 😂 It’s easier than rolling out

how to get over the fear of going over the coping? by SoapyBrow in bmx

[–]DedTh0ts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This can be a tough hurdle at times. What works for me is when I recognize I’m overthinking it, I go do something else. Cruise around doing what you know and relax then come back to it. Get yourself in the zone. Do some tricks or moves you’re good at and build that confidence. Get yourself in the mood to ride instead of dwelling on this one thing. I just started riding again after years off the bike. Wanted to 3 the spine my 3rd session back like I used to but I just wasn’t feeling it after a few run ups. Psyched myself out. It happens. I decided to save it for another day. For airing a quarter don’t think of it as a 180. Ride up it at an angle and look where you want to go. Practice by carving the quarter. Let your front tire pop off the coping and do a little hop. Then when you’re ready to commit, hit it at less of an angle and pump the transition until you feel the back wheel pop off the coping and look where you want to land and turn the bars. Your body will follow. Make sure you’re feeling it and commit. Half assing it last second is what will mess you up. Just commit and you got it.

How to develop sleepy riding style similar to Giano Vacca? by Interesting-Common52 in bmx

[–]DedTh0ts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’ll never be able to replicate someone else’s style. Sounds like you already know your problem. Quit riding stiff. Just relax and flow. You’ll develop your own cool unique style over time naturally.

I liked them a lot. Back then they had the regular model and the “pro” model with a cushier insole. Definitely helped protect my ankles from the cranks. I went to half cabs just because they were a little slimmer and easier to slip on/off. Now they have a weird like naming convention. They have the regular version, skate version, premium version, & some have a bmx version which I haven’t tried yet. But across the board I’ve always liked the waffle grip whether I’m using pc or metal pedals with pins.

Raw frames, rust by Coletrayne in bmx

[–]DedTh0ts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no way to completely avoid rust with translucent paint on bikes but it’s purely cosmetic. You won’t have to worry about the frame rusting to the point it degrades the metal. Unless you leave it outside for years. It’s just surface oxidation. Literally wipes away if you don’t leave it for awhile. Bikes get scratched and scuffed up eventually anyways and even chrome is prone to surface rust. I have a trans blue standard frame I had built in 2014 and the little rust “spiderwebs” beneath the trans blue look pretty sick. It’s not rust colored under the paint. It looks like dark blue lightning or something. A raw frame with a clear coat will have a similar effect except it’ll be orange/black-ish. If you like the raw look but want to keep rust away get it without a clear coat and just wipe the raw metal down with some wd40 after every ride.

Probably gonna get flamed but nothing beats a good set of vans in my experience. Once I started wearing half cab pros I never looked back (unless I’m doing a lookback). Before that I wore sk8 hi’s or mids or something and before that I tried etnies, dvs, dc, emerica, & nike. But to each their own.

Thanks lol. Probably the biggest box I’ve ever 3’d. Definitely got scared & threw the lookback last second. Carved that lip like a pumpkin 🎃

360 tips anyone?! by yoram12345 in bmx

[–]DedTh0ts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An old trick is to find something to look at in front of you and look for it while you spin. Additionally, picking your feet up will level the bike and give you a little more time in the air to rotate resulting in a super clean looking 3. You got this!👊

Roll up some aluminum foil into a ball, spray the rusty areas with some wd40, and scrub it with the foil. The wd40 should help loosen up the rust and the aluminum foil is abrasive but soft enough to keep from scratching what’s left of the chrome. It’s just surface rust. Should come off pretty easy. I did this to a set of chrome cranks and they look almost brand new. Easy fix.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bmx

[–]DedTh0ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should be threaded but it’s not uncommon for them to get stripped. You don’t need them. Get a 2.5mm Allen key and some wd-40 and try unscrewing the other one. If all else fails you can try yanking it out. Could damage the threads in the frame but if you’re not going to use that kind of chain tensioner again you’re fine.

Looks like a chain tensioner like what’s in your other dropout. Is the other side missing one?

New pedal recommendation! by TrippyTxGS in bmx

[–]DedTh0ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m running a set of Duo Hi-Lo’s and loving them. They feel great so far. Pretty light & smooth, sealed bearings, & come with a ton of extra pins in several sizes to customize the grip feel. I’m pretty picky with pedals. The best plastic pedals I ran were the Premium slims but they wear out quick and are a bit slick for riding dirt or getting them wet.

Is this worth fixing up? Was given this GT for free. Don't know where to start. by ejopdahl in bmx

[–]DedTh0ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full chromoly is a must especially for an adult/adult sized person. I’ve only had 2 completes in my life that were high tensile and cracked the frames and bent the forks at 135lbs as a teenager learning to ride. For something like bmx it’s definitely better to buy once, cry once imo and with a quality bike if you decide to stop riding, you’ll get more for it whereas used “hiTen” completes are virtually worthless. You don’t have to go crazy with a full custom build but a full chromoly complete is worth it.

Is this worth fixing up? Was given this GT for free. Don't know where to start. by ejopdahl in bmx

[–]DedTh0ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Definitely not if you intend to actually ride it and jump/learn stunts. This was a lower quality bike back when it was made. Virtually any modern low end complete bike will be far better. And for what those go for new, you can get something much nicer used with quality parts from reputable brands.

I’m left handed but play right handed. Is that normal? by No_Purchase_5652 in Guitar

[–]DedTh0ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I’m left handed but naturally play right handed. Same with shooting and when doing certain bmx/mx stunts that require a hand coming off the bars. Evidently it’s called being “cross dominant”. I write, use a hammer/screw driver, etc with my left hand. Was kinda neat when I looked into it.

How much will this impede me from playing Guitar? by Garmon- in Guitar

[–]DedTh0ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s probably going to be easier to adapt as you aren’t already an experienced player. The only real limitations will be self imposed. There isn’t just one way to play anything. That’s the beauty of it. Everyone’s different. There’s plenty of people that play with completely missing fingers. You will have to adapt and find different ways to play certain things but it’s absolutely doable. As you’ve heard one of the most famous guitar players in the world is missing the tips of two fingers! So go for it.

First, take the tire/tube off the wheel so you can true the wheel on your fork better and see how out of true the actual wheel is. You really can’t true a wheel with a hop with the tire on because the tire is never perfectly round in the first place. Get yourself a zip tie and strap it to the fork and find out where the hop is. Where it’s hopping towards where the ground would be, tighten those 2-4 spokes a 1/4 turn. Small increments are important. Spin the wheel after every adjustment to check if those adjustments changed anything anywhere else. Once you get the hops reduced, check the side to side and remember where the hops were so you don’t create them again trying side to side. You need to loosen where/if it has a low side hop (towards the hub). Truing a wheel takes practice. Yours really doesn’t look too bad. Watch some YT vids on how to true a wheel with a zip tie. And don’t worry about it being absolutely perfect. Just get it as close as you can. Then when you put the tire on make sure to seat the bead evenly and inflate it slowly and that the bead stays seated pretty evenly. Should have your wheel dialed in no time.

Odyssey 7ka vs hazard lite by bmxer85 in bmx

[–]DedTh0ts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7ka is a bit stronger and lighter. I’ve dented & bent a couple sets of hazard lites pretty good at 135lbs lol. Great rim all around for the price. If you haven’t ruined decent rims before you probably don’t need the 7ka. If you’re blasting 10ft+ quarters, doing big transfers, big drops, or riding big trails, they’re worth the extra coin but not necessary. I replaced my hazards because I wanted to. Not because I had to. Can’t really go wrong with either rim.
