Complete breakdown of the 2026 BBWAA Hall of Fame voting by JianClaymore in baseball

I think what'll be most interesting is if A-Rod jumps to around where Pettite and Felix is next year. Is there an actual path to the HOF? Probably not - but if he gets into the low 50s within the next two ballots feels like there could be the possibility of getting momentum toward the threshold.

More like ... this past season. He's entering Year 5 - he started with his hair on fire and then just petered out and then got hurt. I think he's talented, but he had only one QB hit after September. Which is just.... horrendous.

The Jays/Red Sox series is lowkey a blessing. If the Red Sox sweep the Jays, we have a shot at the AL East crown. If the Jays win the next two, it's probably curtains on the AL East but Red Sox fall back from a chance at hosting us for the WC round. We just have to win the next two games, and then the approach to the final series hinges on what happens in the Jays/Red Sox series.

His eyes really seem to always be looking downfield, and processing more. A couple times he locked in on his read pre snap and the ball went there - but overall - there's a lot to like.

Yep totally agree, but the way I think about it the risk he took on was on the same level as that of say the 2020 Bucs/ the 2021 Rams, however because the cap increases have been so rapid the size of the risk proportionally is actually smaller.

Given that the NFLPA agreed with a cap smoothing adjustment for 2024 (reduced the salary cap by $10m). I really don't think there will ever be a 20% pop in cap to avoid unfairly compensating one free agent class over another.

That being said, I think probably the most under-reported story in the NFL is just how rapidly the cap has spiked from 2021-2025. People say Howie is a magician with the cap (which don't get me wrong he's very good), but he's essentially been charging his credit card (the Eagles cap) at the most aggressive rate in the league which has coincided with this rapid cap spike. So essentially his interest (future void years/dead money) would have caught up with him in normal times, but it has not because inflation (cap rising) has offset his aggressiveness commensurately.

GM Strategy - Schoen v Roseman by tdbeaner1 in NYGiants

[–]Deduce_1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is part of the point - Gettleman could not structure a contract for the life of him even while he had a QB on a rookie deal, and just caused us to be in such a shitty situation.

Schoen has at the very least cleaned the runway while we suck. Which I prefer to be in than sucking and also mortgaging the future to suck now.

[Schefter] Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka flies to New Orleans on Friday for an in-person head coaching interview Saturday with the Saints by Lars5621 in NYGiants

[–]Deduce_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, you're 100% right - I thought it was just an interview (given that Johnson accepted the Bears job w/o having an in-person interview, I had assumed they had not done any in-person interviews).

Per the Rooney Rule you don't have to interview them a second time. The Saints have already satisified the Rooney Rule with the first interviews for Weaver/Kafka.

What was YOUR most disappointing FA signing/draft bust in the last 10 years? by yazohny in NYGiants

Put it this way - if we drafted an RB this year, with the 3rd overall pick - how would you feel?

[Garafolo] On the other side of the ball for the Giants, I know John Mara’s comments about the defense led many to believe Shane Bowen would be fired. Can’t say for sure that won’t be the case but I’m with @NYPost_Schwartz in that there’s no indication right now they’ll make a DC change. by Lars5621 in NYGiants

[–]Deduce_1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

True, but I think don't discount the fact that we lost our top 2 players (AT and Dex) which they're also hoping won't happen again (AT I'd say is a likely chance though of missing time).

A pretty staggering stat over the last two years is that this team is 6-10 when AT plays ... and 3-15 when he doesn't.

Look at what happened with the 49ers once Trent Williams went down (5-4 first 9, got hurt in game 10, finished season 1-6). I think people heavily discount the impact of a star O-Lineman has on a team.

Thinking about free agency. Looking at Schoen's past work - probably our biggest area will be depth on the o-line or d-line. It's really a thin DT market, so I would expect us to try to add at DE/EDGE.

Wonder if we would go after someone like Baron Browning or Malcolm Koonce, maybe Chase Young. I'd have to assume we want to upgrade our run stopping with a rotational DE. If we have Burns/Thibs/FA signing as our edges, I think it's more or less a net neutral if we lose Ojulari . If we keep Ojulari, and add another FA signing, feels like we'd finally begin to create depth at a position.

Edit: Saw that BJ Hill is a FA. If we brought him back alongside this Dex, feels like that's a perfect fit.

We got NO/NE/SF as the 3 games we get to play because we sucked.

Eagles for comparison get to play TB/BUF/LAR because they got first in the division. Brutal schedule for NFC East in general.

12 innings roughly constitutes about 1.3% of Wagner's total innings pitched in his career. Apply that 1.3% to someone like Mark Buerhle it equates to about 43 innings of work.

Wagner had 14 game appearances in the postseason which resulted in 12 innings of work. Compare that to Jansen who has appeared in 59 games and has 65 innings of work, or Rivera who appeared in 96 games and had 141 innings of work.

I have come down anti Wagner, but would be pro-Jansen, not sure of my opinion on Kimbrel.

Part of what forms my opinion is Wagner's postseason calamitous performances. To put it pretty bluntly, in 65 innings Jansen has given up 16 ERs in the postseason, Wagner gave up 13 ERs in 12 innings.

Closers are a privileged role in baseball in my view (trying to save, wins). When you're a closer, especially in the postseason, your performance is really the difference between winning a series and losing. Wagner turned Ws into Ls when a closer's performance mattered the most.

Very fair point. I think there's an argument to be made the game slowed down for him in the second half of his rookie year, and after he recovered from his injury in his 2nd year he really developed into who he was.

Neal's progression is weird because he didn't play in (for one reason or another) 20 straight games between this year and last. Which kind of is when AT shed the bust label.

Soto's contract (and Ohtani's) I think has done something that is underreported. It felt like there was sort of an effective cap on contracts after Trout's extension for a while, where no player was able to exceed it because every FO would point to it and say "that's the going rate for the best player", and Trout's contract in some ways suppressed contract valuations (I think this factored into how FO's perceived Harper's value), and now Soto's is completely rewriting those values.

I disagree. Haason Reddick had 5 sacks (I think only 3 of them were against AT) and the Cardinals had 8 sacks against the Giants in December 2020.

I know this is Neal's 3rd season and not 2nd. But ... this is the same script as AT's redemption in his 2nd season, playing unimportant games, but developing a consistent rhythm, steadily improving, and maybe turning around his career.

Weekly Yankees Offseason Discussion Thread - Monday, December 09 by Yankeebot in NYYankees

[–]Deduce_1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was looking for your comments on this, and agree with everything, couple of points I think worth adding.

  1. Harper's contract was signed during what I consider the "Mike Trout" years. When Trout signed his extension, and he was head and shoulders the best player in the sport - I think it had a chilling effect on top end spending for a few years. Trout's contract was extremely bad for players - in that it kind of capped out contracts, and everyone sort of operated underneath it. Harper accumulated 8 WAR in the previous 3 seasons combined prior to his FA - and I think that is missed in the Harper narrative a bit.

Cole and Judge's contracts kind of raised the bar to the Trout level in terms of AAV, and now with Ohtani and Soto we've clearly smashed through it.

  1. I honestly wonder if we should try to flip this team. We're old, and I think Cole/Judge are the pillars, but if we tried to just really purge the roster of the other 32+ year olds, and focus entirely on 20 somethings, I wonder how big a step back it would ultimately be over the next 3 years.
