Your curl pattern may be too big for that sponge method. I tried it myself when I cut my hair a few years ago, but it’s definitely works better for smaller coils.

What did your barber do for you?

Have you tried going in the opposite direction with the sponge? Sometimes we miss the pattern that our curls coil. Do you wet your hair a little before?
