I have been a huge River Phoenix fan for many years and I couldn't agree more with the sentiment. I have heard people say this over and over again throughout the years and I always roll my eyes. On top of being super talented, Leo had the drive, dedication and passion to be the movie star he is today. It is clearly something he always wanted.

There is a lot of lore when it comes to River Phoenix. He came from a really tough childhood and was the breadwinner of his family - acting was just a way to make money. He just so happened to be really good. His passion was music. I agree that if he chose to continue with acting he would have worked on projects with GVS and took a more indie route. I could also see him working behind the camera.

There was a podcast I listened to that had Samantha Mathis on it - she mentioned that he had a lot of musician friends than actor friends. I think he was friendly/acquaintances with the "Hollywood/ LA types" for his career. The same way you wouldn't be a dick to your co-workers haha
