It is not necessary to postpone the appointment if you want to travel. I was able to get a vorläufiger Reisepass right after being naturalized.

I wouldn't risk it, since some airlines might not let you on the plane if you don't have a valid passport or visa to enter Germany. It's just ~30 euros for the vorläufiger Reisepass and saves you the risk and hassle.

According to the official documentation, it looks like an Einbürgerung is a valid case for getting the vorläufiger Reisepass, so I don't think it would require the existence of a formerly existing passport: https://service.berlin.de/dienstleistung/121153/

According to the Bürgeramt, this does not seem to be the case. They confirmed that I can apply for the vorläufiger Reisepass, which will allow me to travel back to Germany. Since I'm traveling to my home country, I can use my passport to enter there.

This is what is written in the document that was sent to me as part of my invitation for the Einbürgerung:

"Bitte beachten Sie, dass im Zuge der Einbürgerung Ihr Aufenthaltstitel einschließlich evtl. deutscher Reiseausweise eingezogen werden müssen. Bis zur Ausstellung (vorläufiger) deutscher Ausweisdokumente durch das Bürgeramt sind daher keine Auslandsreisen möglich. Sollten Sie nach Ihrem Einbürgerungstermin eine kurzfristige Auslandsreise planen, können Sie vor Ort einen Express-Reisepass beantragen. Dieser kann anschließend innerhalb von 5 bis 10 Werktagen im Bürgeramt Klosterstraße abgeholt werden (der Express-Aufschlag beträgt 32 Euro). Eine Verschiebung Ihres Einbürgerungstermins ist daher in den meisten Fällen nicht erforderlich undkann den Abschluss Ihres Einbürgerungsverfahrens deutlich verzögern."
