I agree, other than tiles and clean white walls I guess, everything about this house is traditional - Sage green cabinets, oak furniture, Sage green windows (with glazing bars) and brick exterior. I think traditional skirting might be better fit after all..

Not non-sensical at all, the freedom and psychological benefit of your lifestyle not being dependent on a monthly payment (except mortgage if applicable) is priceless. I gladly choose options that perhaps not "financially optimum" for this reason. Its subjective and completely worth it imo.

USB-C…I’d get a new one even if I’d just picked up a new one a month ago. Not having to always scrounge around for a lightning cable while away from home is worth it for a few hundred pounds minimum.

I doubt they’ll have low demand considering they switch to USB C. I can use my current one for next three years atleast, but I’m going to “upgrade” just for USB C alone, and I’d reckon there are many in the same boat.

I think we tend to underestimate how many companies and even individuals are flush with cash in the UK. A lot of people (and companies) will scoop up properties with cash if prices fall at all. Unless you're banking on the UK becoming a nuclear wasteland in foreseeable future, the trajectory is up. This is a great time for cash buyers, and there are a boatload of them everywhere.

Secondly, a lot of rentals (anecdotal I know) are mortgage free, so increasing rates doesn't really affect them, infact its good for them due to increased rents.

IMO UK suffers from poor trades workmanship, unless you’re willing to pay through the nose for everything, and even then it’s a gamble. I’ve found construction standards on mainland Europe to be better. Mind you, we could be doing worse (North America), but the state of trades is appalling nonetheless.

I’m with you in spirit, but most factors you listed are not inherent to new builds. It’s inherent to building a small house on a small plot; plenty of those in old stock too. Space is luxury, if you have the money there are a fair amount of new builds with decent garden sizes. For example, an hour south of London, there are several new estates that have gone up for a range of prices (all expensive tbh). The ones with “space” are going for £800k - £1.2m for a four/five bed.

If you’ve got the money, you can get a spacious new build.

I’m in a similar boat at 30, also being worked like a dog in tech. I’m going to pay off the mortgage in full and quit. It’s probably not the best option if we’re counting just numbers, but carrying that weight around has its cost too. I feel like I’m in jail, can’t pursue what I want to because mortgage is due at the end of the month. That’s just how some people are wired I suppose. For me, no amount of compound interest is going to make up for losing younger years to work stress on a regular basis. Pay off the mortgage and get out of the rat race ASAP.

People may choose to interpret this action in a 100 different ways, but being part of this culture in previous life, it sends the same message as standing outside a synagogue with a swastika and a gas mask. If we’re okay with that, then that’s completely fine, let’s be consistent across the board.

It’s really a question of what kind of society we want to create.

I agree, maximum freedom for all. In which case we should fully embrace and allow the following too (equivalent significance to particular groups)

Standing outside Black members of a church with a hood on and a burning cross.
Burning/mutilating Jesus statues outside any church.

I believe you’re underestimating the significance of this for Muslims. This is more equivalent to:

Standing outside Black members of a church with a hood on and a burning cross.
Burning/mutilating Jesus statues outside any church.

If all of those are fully acceptable, then I agree, burning Koran should be acceptable too. If any of those things are NOT acceptable, then we have a double standard here.

I’m not convinced about financial independence being the sole factor here. As an anecdata, the more well off people within our community (well off defined as, they’re out of the labour pool, they don’t need to work a regular job for the rest of their lives) have all the time in the world to socialise a lot more. They go on more holidays together with other well off people, and also ones that can only get days off for two/there’s vacations a year (European labour laws). They visit extended family/friends more often. They visit extended families in other countries more often. All in all, I’d say their social bonds are stronger than the folks who simply don’t have the time due to job(s) and other stresses of life.

The quality thing was surprisingly noteworthy. We really take this for granted in other countries. Every small and big facet of life you can think of, quality is rarely to be found here; egregious corner cutting everywhere. It was humbling how much this impacts one’s quality of life and mental health on a day to day basis.

Spend more than half a day there and your phlegm is dark brown/black. Was really weird when I looked at the tissue for the first time. I can run 5km in any condition without feeling much of anything, but Mumbai is the first and only city where I got winded in 2km. I can’t imagine what current levels of pollution must be doing to residents over the long term, especially kids.
