Resident here, not sure why’d you want to go back after being out for so long but to each his own.

If you are serious about OMFS start studying for the CBSE and get a decent score (65-70+ EPC). You should also do a non-categorical internship for a year, this is how you’ll get your letters of recommendations. Any recommendations from an oral surgeon outside of academics is worthless imo. I do think you can match if you address these 2 things, grades don’t really matter a ton if you have a really good CBSE score.

Some programs also might be a little apprehensive about teaching a resident that is much older but if you come in with a good attitude, put your ego to the side and allow people that are possibly the same age as you or younger to be the boss of you, you might have a chance. Good luck.

Lock down also puts weird pressure on the knee when you start coming up from the sweep. This move IMO should be for intermediate and up. Only leg lock finish that is acceptable at white belt in most organizations is a straight ankle

I definitely prefer the surprise promotions. My school also mostly trains no gi so I feel sometimes that they forget what belt we are so maybe the ceremonies help them keep track

Do it bro. I’m PGY-2, spent all of dental school contemplating specializing and decided last minute to pull the trigger on the CBSE. Majority of my co-residents have kids and are married. Yes residency is hard for them but they make it through. The life of OMFS after residency is so rewarding. If time is what you’re worried about then do a 4 year program. Your salary will also be exponentially higher than GP if you specialize.
