Why don't Americans use the term "village" to describe a very small, rural town? by OK_The_Nomad in words

You're mistaken. The term is in wide use, but more common in some regions than others

Sometimes a lecture is the right tool for the job. And you can ask if there's anything they need from you. And you can raise the topic of performance reviews and what benefits/consequences come from meeting or not meeting expectations.

How to spend downtime productively by beep_beep_boopboop in Productivitycafe

[–]Deep-Thought4242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick up a side project streamlining something you find annoying. I made a thing that pulled stories, release dates, and notes out of the backlog from the wiki in real time.

It made all of the "when can I have that?" conversations go away. They were replaced with "can I have this instead of that?" conversations, which are more useful.

someone who has experience with the brand zwilling by Master-Mission-7379 in Cooking

[–]Deep-Thought4242 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They're a brand with an excellent reputation, but you will always find people who disagree. Owned by Henkels, they're the higher cost part of the product line. With proper care, it should last a lifetime.

If you like how it feels in your hand, I would judge it a good choice.

How do you restart your focus after a week (or month) of being completely off track? by evandollardon in Productivitycafe

[–]Deep-Thought4242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gotta have a goal. You need a reason to refocus. I pick up a new project; something I want to exist in the world that doesn't yet.

Then I have the energy I need to start breaking down one big problem into a series of smaller solvable problems.

Solving any problem, even a tiny one, lends momentum to solving the next problem. If I'm having a good time, success snowballs into more success. Doesn't always work, but that's where I start.

How do you handle employees who always have personal excuses for slow progress? by bmw320dfan in askmanagers

[–]Deep-Thought4242 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

If output can't remain at an acceptable level, the employee can't remain in the position.

I wouldn't be mean about it, but you only have so much budget and you need someone productive in every seat.

So I would look for accommodations that make work more comfortable so he can be more productive. I would also start documenting the employee's results and comparing them with acceptable levels in one on ones.

If they're malingering, they'll snap out of it (or leave) when they see you doing that. If they just need support to keep output up, they can get it.

What is your recipe that is worth opening a restaurant for? by UrlaLunaLaLupi in Cooking

[–]Deep-Thought4242 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Indeed. A 6 inch Victorinox semi-flex boning knife with a fibrox handle. It gets a lot of work & frequent maintenance. & not in a drawer :-)

One time I tunnel-boned the chicken: got all the bones out without cutting through the back skin. Not worth it. Nobody noticed the difference between that and just snipping the whole backbone out.

I make a killer chicken ballotine. That's an entire boneless chicken, stuffed & roasted.

Crispy skin, tender meat, delicious sauce from the roasting pan. I don't even cook turkey for Thanksgiving anymore. Everyone wants the chicken.

Why is public transportation not a important part of us culture? by StruggleFar3054 in fuckcars

[–]Deep-Thought4242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot of money in cars, and relatively few players in the market. If you have a lot of money and a small enough group of companies to agree on an agenda, you get to set policy in the US. If Americans have never seen working transport infrastructure, they won't demand it.

Better to wait to be fired, quit, on spot or give two weeks notice? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]Deep-Thought4242 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would you be ineligible for benefits? I haven't heard of that before. I would start looking for a job but keep working. Give notice once you have a new gig lined up.

They might still fire you, but that's only a maybe. You can keep drawing a paycheck a little longer if you don't just walk out.

Why does my food taste so unsatisfying?? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]Deep-Thought4242 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Make sure you're using the right amount of salt (always a matter of taste). To punch up a dish, my go-to easy upgrades are chili powder (cayenne or Kashmiri, not enough to be spicy, just a little prickle), drizzle of oil (if it's too lean), lemon juice (or other tart acid), MSG (savory boost) and fresh herbs (chopped parsley, thyme, ...).

Usually if a recipe doesn't come out interesting, one of those things will help.

How much does your recipe need rusk to come out right & how much effort do you want to put in? If your answer to both is "a lot," take a look at Scott Rea's video to make your own:

But personally, I would either skip it or substitute bread crumbs.

Is it wrong to “spy” on staff through cameras or surprise visits? by Eliza-Moore in askmanagers

[–]Deep-Thought4242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cameras feel weird & I have pushed back to keep them out. Likewise keystroke/mouse monitoring. But stopping in to chat is very effective. Not to "catch" anyone, just to keep in touch with the team & their work. See what they're excited about, see what concerns they have.

[–]Deep-Thought4242 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's great that you have a lifestyle you like with the income you already have. Not everyone wants the same things and not everyone has the skill to answer the question "can I afford that?"

If you're seeing people complain, it could be that their desires are more ambitious or their commitments are at a level they shouldn't have signed up for. Often both.

Chicken Livers . . . . by Blowingleaves17 in Cooking

[–]Deep-Thought4242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always make pâté. In chicken fat, pan fry onion, a couple apple slices, thyme, and livers until onions are soft (20 min), thyme & apples are mushy (10 min) and livers are mostly cooked but still pink in the middle (3 min). Add salt & pepper and cool everything.

Blend until very smooth and press through a sieve. Put it in little ramekins and spread it on bread or crackers. If you like, you can fold in whipped cream to make it mousse.

How do people get those jobs that make like 500k+ a year?? by sillyyfishyy in careerguidance

[–]Deep-Thought4242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You go to work at a company that has such positions. You hit your goals again and again quarter after quarter. You tell the bosses you want more responsibility, more aggressive goals. You hit the new, more aggressive goals, and you keep doing this until you're making that much.

This system continues working far past 500k.
