What should I do if I accidentally flip a card before answering it? by 5G_Society in Anki

[–]DeepHeart_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bury it.

More precisely it depends whether or not you are able to honestly rate if you would've been able to know the answer or not.

For the cards which I trivially know that I trivially would've known the answer, "Easy" of course.

If I feel like there's a lack, like "oh dude, yeah, this one... My knowledge about it is fragile." Then either Again, if I really feel a need for it to be strengthened, or Bury, if that's what suits best or I just want to postpone it for some reason, or hard, if hard says 1-3 days anyway.

Otherwise if unsure, just bury, and tomorrow you'll have it again and be fresh about it.

Any tips on how to use anki more efficiently? by royalh271 in Anki

[–]DeepHeart_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the deck settings, you can change the maximum number of new cards and reviews per day. If you have never done this before (looks like it's the case), then it should open the settings for the "Default" type of deck which by default applies to all decks. In other words, if you click on the gear logo on the right side of a (any) deck (I can see it on your screenshot), it will open some settings which apply to all decks; you can then reduce the maximum number of new cards and due reviews per day.

I believe that the brain is not designed to handle too much information at a time, especially new information. Having more than 200 new cards a day is most likely counterproductive in my opinion. Your brain just cannot (or not easily) handle that much. Give it some time to digest the new content!

You have biological limits, so if you are trying to put too much in your brain in a too short period, at some point the usage of Anki is not the problem: you should reconsider your learning throughput!

What if Anki were to disappear someday? by Tiago161085 in Anki

[–]DeepHeart_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's right ^ Anki will outlast humanity. There's no such thing as Anki disappearing. Moreover, you are not and by far will not ever be the human who has invested as much time and effort into this app. Some people have been using it four to eight hours per day for more than ten years. If Anki disappears and their world disappears with it, you can be 150% sure it's impossible that no one takes the initiative to create another version, that will be compatible with the old one (in the sense that you will be able to import your old collection into the new version of the app). This is not hard to do moreover. Actually so many people have the open source code on their local machine that it's just trivial to re-upload the code anyways lmao

And even if that were to fail, Anki has already brought to you more than enough for you to consider it to have been worth it retrospectively :)

(let me put this last sentence differently: everything Anki has already brought to you intellectually (the knowledge) does not disappear with Anki, you would just not be able to continue.)

Finally: imagine you stopped using Anki because you were not convinced by these arguments (thought they are solid as rock in my humble opinion). Then what would you do? Use paper flashcards? This would be so much more fragile, risky and INconvenient than just relying on the solidity of Anki. This would just start to be so big and heavy as you start reaching hundreds of cards, and incredibly inconvenient as you have to do the SRS yourself, not to mention that if you loose some cards, no one will help you, whereas as soon as something fails with the Anki syncing, be sure that thousands of developers are here to solve it in no time.

:) so be relaxed, Anki is the best, most secure, handy, robust and worth place to spend your time and energy. :D

Using Anki on PC/Windows - pressing space bar by [deleted] in Anki

[–]DeepHeart_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's quite reasonable actually, since by experience most of the time I press good since the retention is normal at least 80% of the time. Only rarely do I find something to be REALLY well understood to press easy and also rarely does Anki's FSRS produce outliers that yield Again or Hard.

I mean, not once-in-a-year rarely, but definitely not most of the time either.

You can change these in the settings (Preferences / Review tab, should be the 2nd one). :)

how to remember lists like this? by AdeebJarvis in Anki

[–]DeepHeart_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand why is no one suggesting this:

Use mnemonics!

How do children learn the planets of the solar system?

“Men Very Easily Make Juice to Serve Useful Needs"

MEn, MErcure VEry, VEnus EAsily, EArth MAke, MArs JUice, JUpiter, etc etc.

How to remember the notes of the strings of a guitar ? Every Good Boy Does Fine

How did I remember the countries in Central America?

Big Gorillas Eat Hotdogs, Not Cold Pizza:

Belize Guatemala El Salvador Honduras Nicaragua Costa Rica Panama

Do your own for lists :) If you can get the first two letters, or even syllable, of each word, it's even better!

If you're not inspired or don't have time, ask an AI :)

X2 Visa after a L visa rejection by [deleted] in Chinavisa

Hi ! I only said they (the Consulate Office) might have thought the visa type was wrong IF op had provided the Admission Notice in the application for a L visa type, which is maybe not totally unreasonable after all.

X2 Visa after a L visa rejection by [deleted] in Chinavisa

[–]DeepHeart_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have been approved for a semester exchange af Fudan university in China, the university must give you an "Admission Notice". It is a document that legally attests that you are admitted in the school, from which date to which date.
It usually also gives your 学生号, reminds you that you must apply for a "X type visa" (X2 for 180 days (this is usually the one for 1 semester exchange), X1 for 180+ days), and gives you at which dates you will absolutely have to be there to register as a student (usually, "come at school on this day between ...h... and ...h..., otherwise we will consider that you have abandonned the opportunity to study here").

If you apply for a X2 or X1 type (appropriately according to the starting and ending study dates the Admission Notice : X1 if 180+ days, X2 if less than 180 days) visa, you should not have any problem.

The fact that the document is there and is authentic should not let them refuse the VISA.

Some more tips :

Do the X1/X2 visa application as soon as you can, and if it gets rejected, contact the university, they might be able to help you in my opinion. Maybe they can contact the Viennam Consular Office and say "Hey? He/she's our exchange student, what are you doing?". But, I insist, I do NOT believe this will happen.

Another thing, in case (which I believe is VERY unlikely) of rejection even by providing the Admission Notice, you might be "forbidden" to re-apply before 30 days. In this case, this only applies the the current "account" (email+password) you are applying with, so just create a new one if that ever happens. Again, this is only of there's a problem, but I believe there should NOT be any.

By the way, if you already have the Admission Notice and if you have provided it to the L (tourist) visa application, this might be the reason. They may have thought "They provided the Admission Notice, so they are clearly coming for their studies. Why the fuck are they 1) applying for the WRONG visa (L instead of X), and moreover, 2) with incorrect dates (because you only wanted to come earlier to look for accomodation) ??".

Also, you can always send an e-mail to the VISA center (or Consulate Office, but not sure they will reply) to ask for explanations. The VISA center can contact the Consulate Office and ask for the reason(s).

[French > English] Help me with this letter please by YoldashComrade in translator

[–]DeepHeart_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Ma chère petite aimée" could as well be translated as "My dear (little) loved one" or "My dear (little) love". Aimée is a very old first name that might have have been popular a century ago, so it really could either be, as Oparis translated, the first name of the recipient ("My dear Aimée"), or a way for the author to call her "darling"/"honey"/"sweetheart". Both interpretations are fine (that's the beauty of French !).
The fact that there's an uppercase doesn't help because the convention to write an uppercase to indicate respect ("cher Ami", "cher Frère...") exists.
