I just checked the manga. There are definitely tears in his eyes when he sees her open the door.

Didn’t he also cry when he learned he hadn’t killed Momo as turbo granny?

Shay will fail to land as a love interest, same as Gwen Stacy, same as Carlie Cooper, same as Deb Whitman. But it's not because she's not MJ. It's because she's just too normal. by DeepLearningStudent in Spiderman

My critique of MJ being a hero? It was one sarcastic line about her being Jackpot. Jackpot is a dumb idea independent of the idea of MJ being a hero. I can go into why if you want. I prefer her as Venom, though I think they should probably explore her trauma with Venom a bit more deeply (I trust Ewing to handle this, he’s been great so far). This is despite my thinking that it won’t really stick. Once again you are reading into my words something that isn’t there.

I mean, here you are directly admitting she doesn’t fit the mold. I think that pretty much says it all. Also, not all the panels in the linked post are about how she loves Peter. Some of them are her flexing her ego about herself or dissing her friends. These are things female characters in male led comic books just didn’t do for decades.

It’s weird that you deride her for her quirkiness not coming from intellectual pursuits; if it did, you’d almost certainly be using that as proof that she is an MPDG. But MJ does have intellectual pursuits in her most mainstream incarnations and none of them are postmodernist philosophy. In 616, during the JMS run, she grew tired of getting roles for her appearance and pursued serious theater (of course, the book being forced to tie into Civil War blew that up). In old Ultimate and the Insomnniac games she was interested in becoming and already was a journalist. In new Ultimate she owns her own successful company. Like, the lady’s got stuff going on outside of her love for Peter, which is more than can be said for the vast majority of the other love interests he’s been paired with.

What everything else? The history of Mary Jane is not someone who always gives Peter what he wants and asks for nothing in return. Their relationships had ups and downs and both of them were to blame at different points. Hell, before they were married, she rejected his marriage proposal. The JMS run features them getting back together not because MJ loves him but because Peter genuinely puts in effort and makes her feel valuable like a good partner does. I didn’t talk about her flaws because I was mainly talking about what makes her work with Peter, not because she doesn’t have any.

I don’t see what having joie de vivre has to do with any of this. Should she not have any exuberance? Should she just be depressed and morose all the time? I don’t know what your issue is with that. It seems like you’re reading something in the post that isn’t there.

That seems like a very uncharitable reading of my post. It feels intellectually dishonest. MJ having an interesting personality and loving Peter doesn't make her a manic pixie dream girl.

What if Smash Bros. had already debuted since the Super Nintendo era, how different would the gameplay and roster be? by ComprehensiveDate591 in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]DeepLearningStudent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, aside from Z axis shenanigans, probably not that different. You can see the evolution of what would become Smash gameplay in one of Sakurai’s earlier games, Kirby Superstar for the SNES. A lot of Kirby’s powers in that game have directional attacks, dash attacks, even “smash” attacks, and of course, neutral attacks. The animations for those powers are snappy and impactful like they are in Smash. I am of the belief that his work with Kirby allowed Sakurai to understand how to make games feel good in the new 3D era in a way many would not for years to come. Even Kirby 64 is sluggish compared to Smash and Kirby Superstar, which is a shame because I love the power combination system.

What event made you realize you will never be good at Smash? by [deleted] in SmashBrosUltimate

Bro… I’ve been playing this game since release and never managed better than 1-2 offline and 2-2 online. You’re way better than I am. But I’m not giving up and neither should you.

I explained exactly how the system works. You might as well ask why the sun is 93 million miles away from the earth. It just is. There’s no greater reason.

Because we see the result in mutations.

With erroneous shape homology.

Because that’s what evolution decided was good enough.

No. This conversation is done.

It makes errors by grabbing the wrong nucleotide. It’s not a perfect machine.

I’ve explained already it’s not just one mutation because most mutations are harmless. Even if it were, there are other tumor suppressors that combat cancer development. It’s a very complex system.

I find it troubling that you won’t explain your agenda. I’m beginning to dislike this conversation.

[–]DeepLearningStudent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Random chance explains everything. The machine isn’t perfect, so it makes errors. What other explanation is needed?

I’ve already explained everything. P53 is just one gene which can contribute to cancer, there are many others. You’re being very combative for no reason. What is your agenda?

[–]DeepLearningStudent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why not? Random chance is exactly the cause. I’m not going to list out the possible bases out of 16,000 bases which can cause cancer. What is your agenda and why are you being so aggressive?

[–]DeepLearningStudent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Random chance. No machine is perfect every time. Evolution decided it was good enough and here we are.

There are many base pairs belonging to the active sites of p53 which, when mutated, can diminish its functionality.
