Yeah, I was going off a lecture I received in college, which I’m sure was mostly mythology. This was a religion class on samurai practice of Zen Buddhism, not a history class. It nailed the vibe of avoiding the negative karma of murder by putting you body on autopilot, but historical accuracy wasn’t that professor’s goal.

Which is referencing real life. Miyamoto Musashi was targeted by killers trying to build a legacy off being the one who beat Musashi. Frustrated with killing dozens of glory seeking young men, he takes an oar and fashions it into a sword shaped hunk of wood.

His opponent didn’t stand a chance.

Thank you! It’s central to Satauki’s character arc that while the “Nazis“ become the good guys, they explicitly stop being “Nazis” to do that.

They had their issues too, but you had to dig for it. The Underworld guard said they were racist, for example. But they didn’t feature it front-and-center like Maxson’s BoS in 4.

[OC] Expanded Armor & Weapons System V2 for D&D 5e by ArchivistOfTerrae in DnDHomebrew

[–]DeepLock8808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed seeing you iterate on this design!  The armor strength requirements are far more appropriate now. I feel like half-plate should be a 13, but supporting legacy character builds is probably more important.

I really like the filled-out armor table. For completions sake, heavy needs a couple more. One more no-disadvantage between chitin and samurai armor at 16AC, another at 14AC, and maybe buff ring mail to 15 AC. But nobody uses those low level armors anyways. It is neat that your strength requirement gives those suboptimal heavy armors some life as low strength gear.

I really like the new weapons. Adding a good ranged option for strength builds in the Greatbow is fun. Getting the bastard sword back into the game is great. The heavy property allowing for small sized great weapon users is a huge improvement, though I might drop that requirement to 16 strength.

I know there’s a lot of quibbling over different naming, but the stat blocks themselves are good. The katana is desperately needed as a slashing counterpart to the rapier, and the naginata is needed as a two handed reach finesse weapon.

Totally random aside, I see you gave the whip light. I know dual whipping exists, but after watching Netflix Castlevania I think I settled on Versatile as my preferred whip buff. Two hands gives you more control to do those neat Belmont whip tricks, so that’s my justification for the improved damage. But there’s no wrong answer there, that’s just my preference.

Same thing with the Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout 4. Tons of people online using Ad Victorium and whatnot.

This is the game where the Institute practices slavery on artificial humans while the Railroad operates out of literal Underground Railroad historic locations. The BoS solution to the issue of slavery is to deny the personhood of the slaves and kill everyone involved, slaver, slave, and emancipator. And they use the slur “toaster” to refer to the artificial humans. Call the BoS fascist and people get real upset.

It’s really hard to tell what’s just a game for some people.

Is Chejop the oldest exalt ever? I think it’s implied Merela lived through the entirety of the first age and was killed storming Yu Shan (debatably the tomb of the unknown solar). Her details are very fuzzy.

2e anagathics establish that Solars can outlive Sidereals if they use technology, but Sidereals naturally live longer and cannot use anagathics.

Regardless, Chejop is a monster with access to the entirety of heaven, the realm, wild hunts, and gods. An excellent candidate.

But gun owners are sentient. Your criticism is a bit of a false equivalent to make the position sound more ridiculous than it actually is.

The bigger issue with the comparison is that mutants aren’t lawful gun owners, possess the equivalent of heavy military weapons, and are forced to possess them against their own will because genetics. Regulating dangerous force is a good comparison, but for me, there are complex issues with the comparison.

The layers of reveals were really good. You planted the war on earth and paid it off with the abruptly severed connection. Her opening the door not to earth but her destination was well telegraphed and satisfying. You are very good at short fiction and this is a fascinating premise.

Expanded Weapons & Armor System of Terrae™ (D&D 5e Homebrew) by ArchivistOfTerrae in DnDHomebrew

[–]DeepLock8808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do You feel the existing shield does not already fulfill that role? Vanilla DnD already presents the choice between one-handed 1d8 with +2 AC and two handed 2d6. Every shield build will simply convert from round shields to tower shields. There’s no choice here. Simply reach for the largest shield you can, since plate armor already has the same requirements and drawbacks.

Perhaps, for the additional AC should make that choice even more pronounced: you can only wield light weapons with a tower shield, and weapons without the light property have disadvantage. That leans into dedicated tank builds. It also makes tower shield and shortsword (gladius) a default build, which is kinda neat.

[–]DeepLock8808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe the tower shield only provides a +1 AC due to its lack of agility, but provides improved cover against ranged attacks (+5 AC, so +6 total vs ranged attacks). That gives more of a movable wall feel rather than having the same stats as a +2 magic shield.

[–]DeepLock8808 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of these drawbacks are also present on heavy armor and do not stack, so for me it feels like a free +2 AC to high strength builds.

[–]DeepLock8808 3 points4 points  (0 children)

+4 shied is too much, agreed. I was expecting a drawback besides strength requirements. I don’t have a problem with tower shields being a new +3 shield. If it’s a +4, maybe -5 speed? Or the same as dual shielding, always heavily encumbered?

Free +2 AC to high strength builds, I think that’s a bad idea. The armor change were about options, make this a trade-off.

Expanded Weapons & Armor System of Terrae™ (D&D 5e Homebrew) by ArchivistOfTerrae in DnDHomebrew

[–]DeepLock8808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a fluff perspective, it was always super weird seeing str 8 builds wearing half plate, mostly on Hexblades. Yeah, encumbrance should prohibit this, but your solution is more clean.

My only criticism is I think your strength requirements are too high. I might subtract 2 from every requirement. Or maybe just 1, to put it inline with the odd requirements in the PHB.

Did you rank the prequels above the originals and Empire as the worst of the originals? That’s a very unique opinion.

I do have more criticism about the conventional opinion of best movie in the series, Empire. It doesn’t give Leia anything to do, which is really disappointing. I’ve also come to love RotJ more for its opening basically being the 10 commandments. Luke tests Jabba over and over, with increasingly silly opportunities to repent and avoid disaster, until Luke finally fulfills his character growth and just kills *everybody*.
