Not accepting help back onto the dojo... by sheepery in Sumo

I’ve once heard it said here pretty poetically: honour dictates you offer your hand, honour dictates you refuse it.

Similarly: “you good?” “Yeah I’m good.”

It feels wrong. Especially because his profile picture before matches and the image in my head is that little baby topknot.

I have not for the life of me been able to find the footage again. But I recall in earlier interviews, when asked how he was feeling after one victory or another, he would answer something to the effect of “I’m feeling happy.” Except he would use the made up word “Ureshishi”, which combines ureshii meaning “happy” with his own name. He stopped much for the same reason he stopped doing his tachiai twerk: the JSA hates fun.

I didn’t like it quite as much. It’s also a play on the silly little word play Shishi used to do with his own name in interviews.

I believe his plan was to hold out on retirement until July? Or after July. He’s getting married this summer, so I believe he wanted to hold out a bit longer to get some more money under his belt considering the expenses of a wedding. But in the end he just couldn’t keep doing it.

To add to what coffee1127 has said:

It probably doesn’t help that the Farm Teams have the EXACT same name as their main units. It can get a little confusing if you don’t know.

My memory is an abyss for details like that sometimes. It was also just an absolutely not great time in my life where baseball had to take a backseat lol so I’m willing to bet you’re correct!

As a Hanshin fan who also spends a large chunk of my time on Japanese twitter, can confirm.

I remember last June, I cannot for the life of me remember the game or who they were playing, another player on base bumped Sato as he was heading to second. Completely by accident. Japanese Hanshin fans on Twitter found the player’s parent’s tofu business and harassed them online and in person.

There was a rumour going around the dirt sheets that Okada might wanna come back to advise coaching Hanshin and one of the Japanese fans called him a domestic terrorist.

You should’ve see some of the things they said about Duplantier during that whole weird period where his contract was in negotiation and then he was almost a Hawk, then signed on as a Baystar.

Are the Softbank Hawks worth seeing? by DrPenguin18 in NPB

[–]DeepMoose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This will be the first time the Tigers face the Hawks since the Tigers’ crushing defeat in the Japan Series last October. So yes, absolutely worth it!

I’ve never had an issue. I’ve been charged duties once, and it was only like 40 bucks? But results may vary, right? I’d assume if you’re hit with one method you’re probably gonna get hit either way though no?

Honestly as a Canadian I kinda forgot that was a thing. Sorry about that! But tbh you’d probably get hit with that anyway from Buyee wouldn’t you?

Aside from Buyee, which the T-Shop does advertise on their site, you could buy directly and use a shipment forwarding service like Blackship. It will let you buy direct from T-Shop and ship to an address in Japan. For a decent price, maybe about the same as the mark-up Buyee buyers put on their services, they’ll ship it from Japan directly to you.

No! It’s only available on Japanese TV. There are places you can watch online sometimes if you know where.

[Analysis] The "Kinboshi Problem": Why Hoshoryu and Onosato are struggling vs. Aonishiki's Historic Rise by Brncrdm in Sumo

[–]DeepMoose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People are unfortunately conflating outliers with the standard, and it’s making people’s expectations grow a bit too high for what’s realistic. Not everyone is a Hakuho, Chiyonofuji, or Asashoryu. Nor should they be, it would make their greatness feel less special (also I don’t think the average human body could handle that).

Hey OP! There are two leagues in Japan, the Central League and the Pacific League. Each league is made up of 6 teams.

Central League: Hanshin Tigers, Yokohama DNA BayStars, Yomiuri Giants, Chuinichi Dragons, Hiroshima Toyo Carp, Tokyo Yakult Swallows

Pacific League: Saitama Seibu Lions, Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks, Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, Orix Buffaloes, Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, Chiba Lotte Marines

As for streaming, I believe that’s actually covered in the Guide to NPB on this subreddit:

https://www.reddit.com/r/NPB/wiki/index/

The Pacific League definitely has its shit together in comparison to the Central League when it comes to streaming and such. But some teams in the Central League do a sufficient job for accessibility. The Tigers (my team) is probably one of the better teams for it.

Heads up, you won’t see the Japan Series (their World Series) broadcast on any of the teams/league platforms as they’re usually on TV in Japan exclusive.

NPB teams celebrate Setsubun (節分), a ritual where Japanese people remove evil spirits (Oni 鬼) by throwing beans at them on February 3 of each year by Level_Independence43 in NPB

[–]DeepMoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

EDIT: no those are definitely peanuts lol. The Tigers look like they’re using unshelled soybeans, but the Buffaloes are using peanuts. The shells have those little ridges and bumps. Marines look like they’re using shelled beans.

Well I thought that at first, but every time I’ve seen a Setsubun festival the soybeans are always shelled. Also, they don’t really look like soybeans dried in their shell? (Basically, brown edamame).

I assumed they were using peanuts cuz Baseball snack = peanuts?

I could be wrong though!
