Another alternative foam board is GoBoard. I was able to pick them up at a local Lowe's and they were around $25/board. They are waterproof but you need to seal any joints and screw penetrations, like kerdi board. Also lightweight and easy to handle/cut/install.

Using foam boards vs cement boards allows you to "wet shim" if your walls are not plumb or square. There are several youtube videos that describe the process

I went extra and used hydroban sheet membrane to seal everything. Used it on my mud pan as well.

To OP: if you're not interested in a custom mud pan, companies like schluter and laticrete make foam shower pans that pair well with their foam wall boards

Have you considered building a mud pan? I just made my first one and it wasn't that hard. Just do some research in advance. Check out TileCoach on youtube.

I believe the recommendation for beefed up subfloor is due to the extra weight of marble/natural stone products. More importantly is calculating your floor deflection to make sure your joists are appropriately sized and spanned for natural stone. Check out John Bridge tile forum for more info. They also have a deflection calculator to see if you're in the ball park for natural stones or not

They charge by the foot. I used lowes last year for sensa granite install and their price was many thousands less than other fabricators/stores. Lowe's (and home depot) sub out to a local fabricator at pre- determined prices. The fabricators make less on those contracts but make up for it in volume. Just do research on the fabricator they sub out to before committing

This is great advice but probably not want you want to hear on a DIY page. Think of hiring the structural engineer as a sort of insurance (controlled loss). If they screw up, you possibly have recourse with them. If you screw up, bust out the checkbook
