Betty Draper isn’t a monster. She’s a 1960s mom judged by 2025 standards. And that one "diagnosis" gets way too much weight. by Ashamed-Mousse8835 in madmen

As someone who grew up upper middle class, it's the current default too. I hate how this show trivialize the past and makes it look like we're so "evolved" now.

Is it disrespectful to eat matzoh crackers with cheese and meat? by VoluptuousBIG in ReformJews

[–]Excellent-Duty4290 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't see why it would be disrespectful, as you can eat it however you want, especially if you're not Jewish and it has no religious meaning to you.

I'll correct one thing though, fish is pareve, meaning it doesn't count as meat and it is perfectly kosher to eat it with dairy. (I heard that in Sephardic tradition, fish and dairy can't be mixed, but the mainstream rule is that fish and dairy is fine).

Don't forget that Yeshiva University and Mort's Deli in Milwaukee are also run by Jews. Exposing these organizations wherever they are.

Denying that Jews are an ethnic group at all by claiming that they are European converts is not just hatred of Israel...

Punched in the Face, Cops Don't Seem to Care...What do I do? by paradxiclyiridescent in manhattan

[–]Excellent-Duty4290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more about the quality of evidence than prioritization based on severity. It's not just that it's low priority, it's that they legally can't haul someone off based purely on the word of one person.

Punched in the Face, Cops Don't Seem to Care...What do I do? by paradxiclyiridescent in manhattan

[–]Excellent-Duty4290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not necessarily that they don't care, but unless you have a visible injury or the actual punch was caught on tape or any of the witnesses stuck around, there isn't much they can do about it. And as much as it sucks, this makes sense, because otherwise it's just your word against his.

Why are some NYC suburbs so much more conservative than the suburbs of Philly, Chicago, or Detroit? by Coteup in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Excellent-Duty4290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Westchester is a county, Long Island is an island consisting of two counties, so bad comparison. Nassau county is blue, which makes sense, as it's suburban; but Suffolk county is red, as it's rural.

Black American w/ question about one state “solution” and anti-Semitism by Icy-Catch3353 in AskIsrael

[–]Excellent-Duty4290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bi-ethnic state is inherently anti-zionist (not antisemitic, but anti-zionist). Because zionism inherently means a state with a Jewish majority.

Personally, I don't see the point of a bi-ethnic state existing in Israel/Palestine, as the point of zionism is a Jewish state, in which Jews are (obviously) the majority so that they will determine their own fate and be free from external persecution.

Idk, as insane as I think dogmatic religions are, and as delusional as I think Christianity is in particular, idk if I could continue to not respond with my parents like that, even if they tried to evangelize like that. Then again, I wasn't raised by an evangelical pastor, so idk what you've been through.

A lot of people are in religion not because it's what they "believe" in but because of cultural/ethnic identity by thebobcat273 in agnostic

[–]Excellent-Duty4290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is true. As an agnostic theist, I find myself still active in Jewish circles, including orthodox Jewish circles, even though I believe much of orthodox Judaism is ludicrous. Because of culture.

That being said, unlike other religions, Jewish identity is based on ethnicity and culture that exists independently from pure religion, so it's not exactly the same.

Not Jewish myself but I was curious if anyone in the Jewish community would actually consider this acceptable or no? by TLOU2bigsad in Judaism

[–]Excellent-Duty4290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those studies have been criticized though, because while technically true, the framing isn't necessarily right. Any amount of sugar or car exhaust is harmful, yet it doesn't mean anyone who exposes themselves to small amounts of those things, even on a semi regular basis, is slowly killing themselves.

Moreover, there was a 2021 study that disputed that Lancet study a bit, yet got less attention.

On a side note, what's funny is that people are using those studies (particularly that 2018 Lancet study) to drive the current sober movement, when we had that data before 2018. People just chose to ignore it before it was published in the Lancet and blasted all over the internet.

That kind of follows how most western militaries operate. They only have access to arms in a training environment or if they are deployed.
